Your Passage to AUB
Peering out from campus into the commotion of Bliss Street is a passageway with a weathered cast iron gate. Students pour back and forth through this gate connecting AUB and the world just outside. For generations, this has been known as the Main Gate, the primary entrance to AUB. The gate is not only an opening onto AUBís idyllic residential university campus, but is also passage to a historic educational center that has changed thousands of lives.

The current Main Gate building dates from 1902. Bliss Street itself has changed a good deal from the days when the tramline used to run in the middle of it. But as you walk through the gate today, you still come face to face with College Hall and, if you look carefully, you can catch a glimpse of the Mediterranean to the left. All at once the charm and beauty of AUB are realized.

On the occasion of the Main Gateís centennial, it seems appropriate to name this, AUBís new worldwide quarterly magazine for alumni and friends, after this highly symbolic passageway. Like the historic gate, the magazine will be your entry to todayís AUB, regardless of where you are around the world

We will do our best to keep you current on the exciting developments at AUB. We also will welcome your letters, e-mails, and contributions to help us keep the AUB community up-to-date on the personal news and professional achievements of alumni and friends, as well as your comments on Main Gate. Please address your correspondence to Main Gate at
or write to us in Beirut or New York.
