Don't Leave Before Leaving Your Fingerprints
  -     Every year an exceptional graduating class leaves AUB and proudly launches into the world of careers and higher studies. The class of 2002, however, had a distinctive quality that made it stand out from the 133rd before it. This class left its fingerprints.
Towards the end of the spring semester, Dr. Imad Baalbaki, director of development and external affairs, introduced an idea enabling students to help each other financially. The concept was received with much acclaim from student members of the University Students Faculty Committee (USFC), who immediately went into action, rallying friends and fellow majors to join the program. USFC agreed to match each donation from a graduating student on a two to one basis. Graduating students had the chance to donate $25 or more to the Fingerprints Scholarship Fund, which was established by the Office of Development.
The idea was also discussed with AUB Trustee Kamal Shair, who has been encouraging the establishment of such programs. Trustee Shair enthusiastically supported the effort and also promised to match, on a two to one basis, donations from graduating students. Thus, every donation of one dollar from any graduating student in 2002 is actually worth $5, since it is matched by $2 from Trustee Kamal Shair and $2 from USFC.
The enthusiasm and energy of students willing to help was heartening, as the 2002 class managed to raise over $10,000 in donations to Fingerprints from the 363 students who participated in this effort. This amount, and the matching funds, will be placed in an endowment fund which will be invested. The return on this investment will be used to provide financial assistance to needy and qualified students at AUB. The names of these generous students will be recorded in a special section of the AUB Contributors Report, in addition to being engraved on a wall to be installed prominently on campus.
Student donors were also invited to a reception held by President Waterbury on July 10 at Marquand House. Addressing the guests, Dr. Waterbury welcomed them as alumni who now join thousands of other successful colleagues around the world. He remarked: "alumni like you will provide the opportunity to needy and qualified students to continue their education." More than 250 student donors attended the function.
Fingerprints, hopefully, is a program that will persist for years to come. Not only does it benefit needy and qualified students, but it more importantly represents the unity and support of students for and among one another.
