POLICY GUIDELINES FOR SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM FACULTY
DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
AUB has two
intramural programs to support faculty development for research purposes for
faculty in the full-time professorial ranks. Part time faculty members
are not eligible for faculty development grants:
(1)
short-term support to travel to international conferences to present research
results;
(2) long-term
development during the summer months (between 2 and 8 weeks);
In addition,
the University Research Board supports visiting senior scholars from other
universities for up to one-week, based on applications approved by each
faculty/school’s dean.
Applications
for faculty development grants should strongly reflect a record of prior
research productivity from previous awards, where applicable. Applicants must
also clearly state whether they have received or are receiving, or applying for
funds from either University or external sources. The following general
guidelines pertain to both programs.
-
Applicants may receive URB financial support
for only one faculty development, long or short term, grant per year.
-
Applicants for short-term or long-term faculty
development grants should present an invitation from a host institution or
organization.
-
The URB will not award faculty
development grants to faculty members on a one-year contract or those who
are in their terminal year with the university.
-
Visiting professors with contracts of less than
two years are not eligible for long or short term faculty development
grants.
-
The University can only support the routing
described in the letter of award. Faculty members who request different
an/or additional routing must themselves bear the expense of these changes.
Short-term
applications
-
Short-term applications for faculty development
grants should reach the Office of the Provost five weeks prior to
the date of activity.
-
The duration of a short-term faculty
development program should not exceed 7 calendar days for the purpose of
presenting a paper at international scholarly conferences.
-
A recipient of a short-term faculty development
grant who will be presenting a paper at an international conference,
symposium or meeting will normally get a 100% per diem* for the actual days
of the conference (hotel, and food), registration fees
up to $ 550, and an airplane ticket. Only for conferences in US and Canada,
the URB grants one extra day of per diem for travel purposes. Faculty who
apply to attend a conference without presenting a paper will not be funded.
-
Applicants should submit a letter of invitation
for the proposed activity with an evaluation by the chairman of the
department and the Dean.
Please be reminded that the settlement of the advanced travel will be on expense rather than per diem
basis. All receipts such as hotel, registration fee, meals, taxis etc, must be
submitted for the Comptroller's consideration.
* Per diem
covers hotel stay/night + food (-if the hotel rate does not exceed the daily
allowance, food is counted to a total up to 75$ daily/-if hotel rate does exceed
the daily allowance, 50$/day is added to the food item
Long-term
applications
-
Applications should be received by the URB on April 30, 2009.
-
Applicants should submit a comprehensive work
plan of the proposed activity with an evaluation by the chairman of the
department and the Dean.
-
Faculty members wishing to apply for long-term
faculty development grants may do so only after 22 months have lapsed since
their last long term award.
-
Faculty are paid round trip travel and a
stipend of $2000US per 30 calendar days, pro rated. The duration of a long
term faculty development program ranges between 15 to 60 calendar days.
-
All
receipts such as hotel, sublet apartments, ground transportation, car
rental etc, must be submitted, along with an expense report to the Provost's
Office, for the Comptroller's consideration.
