AUB
staff launch clean-up campaign on Bliss Street
About 30 AUB professors, staff, and students were joined by friends
and neighbors on Wednesday, July 26, in a clean-up drive on Bliss
Street, where garbage has been accumulating ever since most of the
garbage collectors fled the country because of the war. Volunteers
hope to move their clean-up campaign to another street in the upcoming
week. The clean-up campaign was launched by some staff members in
the University's Comptroller's Office, but was quick to attract a
number of other volunteers.
"We wanted to set a good example for our community," said
Zeina Sadaka, one of those who initiated the campaign. "It was
really great to see some people come down from their apartments with
brooms in hand, eager to help out in the cleaning." The effort
was so well-received that organizers are thinking of cleaning up a
new street every few days. "This is our way of fighting the war
and holding on to hope and life," said Sadaka.
Brooms, trash bags, dustpans and rubber gloves were distributed to
all volunteers, courtesy of AUB.
"Here at AUB, we care about the environment," said Rosie
Nassar, who works in the Office of Grants and Contracts. "We
wanted to make our own contribution to helping the country face the
current challenge."
