Emergency Relief -
Nahr El-Bared Relief Campaign

In
response to the growing humanitarian crisis which is
occurring in North Lebanon at the Nahr El-Bared Camp, a
group of faculty and students from the American University
of Beirut (AUB) and other institutions initiated the
“Nahr El-Bared Relief Campaign” (http://www.nahrelbaredcampaign.org/;
contact persons below), whose main task is to assist in the
relief of the families displaced from the camp to other
temporary locations.
The
Nahr El-Bared Relief Campaign is working with civil society
groups and grassroots organizations which are on the ground
in the camps where people have fled. This includes, but is
not restricted to, the camps of Beddawi, Shatila, and Bourj
al-Barajneh, which are mostly affected by the current
crisis, and are feeling the major brunt of having to cope
with hundreds of displaced families and their sheltering
needs. The Relief Campaign is currently providing basic
necessities to the needing families, which consist mainly of
medicine, diapers, kitchen materials, clothing, and hygiene
kits. According to reports, and what we are hearing from
the people on the ground, the situation remains extremely
critical and requires additional aid and supplies to prevent
a further increase to the already growing humanitarian
crisis.
The
Task Force for Reconstruction and Community Service (TFRCS)
at AUB, which was initially formed in response to the Summer
2006 war, and since one of its main objective is for AUB to
be involved with community relief efforts in times of
crises, is endorsing the Nahr El-Bared Relief Campaign and
will be providing it with the support that it can offer.
This is in terms of channeling funds available to the TFRCS
for the relief of the displaced refugees, and to serve as an
official channel for soliciting funding and volunteering
services from the AUB community. The Relief Campaign has
depended so far on individual donations and efforts by its
few volunteer members. It is currently “adopting” 50
families on a regular/daily basis (at the cost of about
$10/family/per day for basic supplies), in addition to many
more families who were served on ad-hoc basis (around 300).
Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of AUB are
kindly invited to assist in this task, through
(tax-deductible) donations to the TFRCS via the Office of
Development at AUB, or
through in-kind donations, earmarked to the Nahr El-Bared
Relief Campaign, as follows (an acknowledgment receipt will

Any
volunteering support from individuals or societies
and clubs is more than welcome, as teams of volunteers are
already working on the ground to assist in the relief
efforts. Please contact Prof. Muhammad Ali Khalidi, from
the Campaign Relief, for this purpose (contact address
below).
Please
note that the “Nahr El-Bared Relief Campaign” is not
affiliated with any political parties and its sole function
is the participation in relief efforts by partnering with
the civil society groups (jam3iyyat) that are already active
in the various camps. The Relief Campaign will be
accountable to the TFRCS on its actions and spending through
regular reports which will be made available to the public.
We
hope that, with our modest support, AUB can make a token of
contribution towards the massive need for community
suffering relief in such critical times of crises, which we
hope will end soon.
For
a better community,
