Volunteer spirit
takes off on campus
 |
Students get
acquainted
with a
variety of
NGOs
|
It took only three
students to bring
the spirit of
volunteerism to
campus on May 24 and
25, with an all-day
fair that was set up
in the courtyard in
front of West Hall.
Engineering students
Eric Abi-Younes,
Hani Tohme and Elie
Khoneisser decided
to invite
non-governmental
organizations to the
University, in order
to help students
become acquainted
with a variety of
social causes. More
than 30 NGOs
responded to the
call.
Dubbed NGO Social
Day, the event gave
organizations the
opportunity to set
up stands and
distribute leaflets
to promote their
causes, in the hopes
of recruiting
volunteers. Indeed,
both organizers and
participants
considered the event
to be a great
success, with more
than 500 students
signing up with the
volunteer
organizations.

The idea for this
first-time event
came about after
last summer's war
when the need for
volunteers rose
exponentially, said
the engineering
students, all of
whom are volunteers
themselves.
"We realized that
there was no single
event that brought
together
organizations
working on social
causes and
students," said
Abi-Younes. "So we
took the initiative
to do something
about it."
"We are very happy
with the results and
hope to make this an
annual event," said
Khoneisser.
Several NGO
representatives said
they were pleasantly
surprised with
student turnout and
interest. "We will
definitely
participate again
next year," said
several NGO
representatives.
