Summer 2006
Agriculture, Food Sciences, and Nutrition
During the Israeli war of aggression on Lebanon in July-August 2006,
the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences (FAFS) and Healthy Basket
(HB) initiated a joint initiative to provide relief support to the
displaced from the South and the Southern Suburbs. The Fruits and
Vegetables Initiative was designed to provide vitamins and minerals
through fresh food rations, in quantities sufficient to satisfy 30%
of a child's requirement, as recommended by Dr. Nahla Hwalla from
the Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition. Varied fresh products
were purchased from the market and packed on Healthy Basket premises
by HB staff and volunteers from the displaced community. They were
distributed daily by HB to the displaced families in the centers belonging
to the AUB catchments (1400 families).
