- The Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine held
a dinner in honor of Dr Samir Najjar on February 23, 2012 at
Hotel Le Bristol. Dr Najjar was honored by his family and
friends, many of whom came from abroad to celebrate this
special occasion.

- The 3rd Annual Pediatrics Update Symposium was held by
the Department on February 24 and 25, 2012. More than 350
attendees came from all over Lebanon.

- Dr Karim Diab joined the Department of Pediatrics and
Adolescent Medicine as Full time faculty member on August
11, 2011 as Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics,
subspecialty of Pediatric Cardiology
(Read).
- The Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine
welcomed Dr Haya Hamade as Full time faculty member. Dr
Hamade joined the department on August 1, 2011 as Instructor
of Clinical Pediatrics (Read).
- On Friday June 3, 2011 at Riviera Hotel, department
faculty, staff, and friends were gathered to honor the
graduates of 2011. Dr Abboud started with his welcome speech
and distributed the shields to the graduating residents,
along with Dr Ziyad Ghazzal, representing the Dean of the
Faculty of Medicine, Dr Mohamad Sayegh.
Our eight Pediatricians/graduates were: Drs Rima Khinkarly,
Abeer Hani, Maya Dirani, Maria Karam, Samer Masri, Bilal Bou
Ali, Marwan Al Aswad, and Mohamed Najjar. Dr Abeer Hani won
the Resident of the Year Award. The Teacher of the Year
Award was won by both Dr Nadine Yazbeck and Dr Rana
Sharara-Chami. Fellows who graduated were: Dr Khodr Ozoor (Pediatric
Critical Care), Dr Kawsar Alamiddine (Neonatology), and Dr
Lina Hajar and Loma Samia (Hematology/Oncology).

The Department of Pediatrics and
Adolescent Medicine held its 2nd Annual Pediatrics Update
Symposium on February 25 and 26, 2011 at the Issam Fares
Hall, AUBMC. The event was jointly sponsored by Cleveland
Clinic Foundation.
The symposium Chair, Dr Sami
Sanjad, opened the conference with a welcome word to the
attendees, recognizing the co-chair, Dr Marianne Majdalani,
Ms Amal Rahi, symposium coordinator, and members of the
Organizing Committee, thanking also the speakers and
sponsoring companies.
The symposium included a wide
variety of topics of interest to the practicing Pediatrician
and covered most pediatric subspecialties. More than 270
pediatricians, family physicians, residents, students, and
nurses attended the event. Speakers were mostly faculty
members from the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent
Medicine as well as from other departments at AUBMC. These
included Dermatology, ENT, Genetics, Internal Medicine,
Neurosurgery, Nutrition and Dietetics, Orthopedics,
Orthodontics, and Psychiatry. Guest speaker Dr John Fayyad,
associate professor of psychiatry from St George Hospital,
Balamand University, gave a very informative talk about ADHD
diagnosis and co-morbidity within the neuropsychiatry
session. Dr Hala Tfayli, Assistant Professor of Clinical
Pediatrics and Endocrinology at AUBMC presented The Samir
Najjar Endocrinology Lecture on Type I Diabetes under the
endocrinology and metabolism session.
In its second year, the Annual
Pediatrics Update symposium was very well received by the
audience and the activity was granted a maximum of 12.25
category I AMA PRA credits.

- The Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine held
its Annual Graduation Dinner for graduating residents on
Friday May 28, 2010 at Holiday Inn, Dunes, Verdun. Dr Sami
Sanjad started his speech by thanking the Department's staff
and faculty members for their efforts during the past year
and wished the best to the graduates. He then described the
six graduating residents and distributed the shields of the
Department to them: Dr Malak Atoui who will be the chief
resident in the coming year, Dr Batoul Majed who will spend
next year in research at Harvard University, Dr Imane
Mahfouz, will start her fellowship in infectious diseases in
the department, Dr Ramia Zakhour who will continue as fellow
also in Texas, Dr Rita Makhraz and Dr Hiba Chehab who will
start their own private practice as Pediatricians.
Dr Sanjad presented the shields of the Department to
graduating fellows: Dr Loma Samia, Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology, and Dr Mohamad El Bitar, Pediatric
Neurology.
Dr Imane Mahfouz won the "Resident of the Year" Award as
elected by her colleagues and superiors and Dr Samir Najjar
was elected as "Teacher of the Year" for the second time. Dr
Sanjad presented the award to Dr Najjar and thanked him on
behalf of the Department for his invaluable contributions to
the Department and the institution during all these years.
Dr Najjar stated that department members and staff are the
major contributors in all achievements. The graduating residents then presented a symbolic gift as
expression of gratitude, to their chief resident Dr Nadia
Jradi who was of great support to them during the past year.
They also prepared a slide show describing their experience
and activities together.

This service is an invaluable addition to our department since pediatric obesity has reached epidemic levels worldwide and is on the rise in Lebanon. The program is the first of its kind in the country and operates through a multidisciplinary approach, taking into account the medical, nutritional, and psychosocial aspects of the problem. - The Annual Graduation Dinner of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine took place this year at the Bristol Hotel on Saturday May 30, 2009. Acting Chairman Dr Sami Sanjad distributed shields to the seven graduating residents, describing the attributes and destination of each one of them next year:
- Dr Carole Al Aridi: research fellow in hematology-oncology
- Dr Nadia Jradi: chief resident
- Drs Dima Hamideh and Lina Hajar: fellows in hematology-oncology
- Dr Ibrahim Al Shareef: fellow in neurology
- Dr Kawthar Alameddine: fellow in neonatology
- Dr Cynthia Chehade: research fellow in pediatric cardiology
Dr Cynthia Chehade won the "Resident of the Year" award, and Dr Tarek Alsaied won the "Intern of the Year" award. Dr Lama Charafeddine won the "Teacher of the Year" Award as elected by the residents and fellows.
After distributing the awards, Dr Sanjad presented to Dr Nadim Cortas, on behalf of the department, an engraved silver
plate appreciating his invaluable work and years of service as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

- The NCPNN, under the directorship of Dr Khalid Yunis, received the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) grant for the establishment of a
Neonatal Resuscitation Program in Lebanon. In collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and the UNICEF, Dr Lama Charafeddine is leading the implementation of the program across the member hospitals of the network. (More)
- Sponsored by Orphan Europe, the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine hosted the
5th Middle East Metabolic Group (MEMG) Meeting on February 19, 20, and 21, 2009, at Le Royal Hotel, Dbayeh.
As in previous meetings, the topics presented encompassed a wide variety of important aspects of inherited metabolic diseases. These included: preventive neonatal screening, mitochondrial diseases, and lysosomal storage diseases. There were three sections dedicated to selective metabolic disorders involving respectively the liver, kidney, and heart, in addition to a session called "Neurotransmitter and Selective Neurometabolic Disorders". Throughout the symposium, there were lectures on specifics aspects of therapy of selective inborn errors of metabolism, including enzyme replacement, bone marrow transplantation, and stem cell transplantation. The speakers were selected not only on the basis of their expertise, but also on their recognized contribution to their field of specialization.
There were speakers from France, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Bahrain, Oman, Iran, Egypt, and Kuwait. Lebanon was well represented with nine speakers, six from the Faculty of Medicine at the American University of Beirut (AUB). There were over 170 physicians and health-related professionals who registered and attended the two-day meeting.

- The Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine
held its annual resident graduation ceremony on Saturday
June 31, 2008 at Movenpick Hotel, Mistral Ballroom. Chairman Dr Mohammad Mikati,
started the ceremony with a slide presentation demonstrating
the remarkable achievements of the department in the past 13
years with respect to expansion of services, residency
program, and others. Dr Mikati then distributed shields to the
seven residents who
completed their training in Pediatrics: Dr Marwa El Jamal, Dr
Sahar Abu Daher, Dr Bassem Shamseddine, Dr Khaled Yassine, Dr
Roukaya Hammoud, Dr Lina Merjaneh,
and Dr Randa Makhoul.
Dr. Roukaya Hammoud received the "Resident of the Year" Award, as elected by her colleagues and teachers.
Drs Khalid Yunis and Marianne Majdalani
were winners of the "Teacher of the Year" Award, as elected by the interns and residents.
Dr Randa Makhoul is continuing in the department as chief
resident for the coming year, Dr Lina Merjaneh as
neonatology fellow, Drs Roukaya Hammoud and Khalid Yassine
are going to the United States for further training.
Dr Salman Mroueh delivered a speech describing Dr Mikati's
outstanding career and contributions to the department. He
then presented the Hans Zellweger Award to Dr Mikati on
behalf of the department, an award given in recognition of
the recepient's "seminal contributions to the fields of
Pediatrics and Pediatric Neurology that were exemplified by
the career of Dr. Hans Zellweger".

- National Campaign Against Epilepsy
Dr Mohammad Mikati, Director of the Adult and Pediatric Epilepsy Program, is currently organizing, as the President of the
Lebanese League Against Epilepsy, and in collaboration with the Lebanese IBE chapter, a major National Awareness
Campaign in Lebanon Against Epilepsy that includes making several awareness films and public information brochures,
as well as lectures in the community and in schools. The above campaign is the first of its kind in the Arab world.

- The Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine celebrated the annual graduation of its residents on Friday 25
May, 2007, at AUBMC - Residents’ Lounge. Chairman Dr Mohammad Mikati distributed shields to the five residents who
completed their training in Pediatrics: Dr Saleh Bhar, Dr Hanane Dahoui, Dr Majd Makhoul, Dr Joe Chaker El Khoury
and Dr Hassan Halawi. He also thanked, in the name of the department, Dr Rania Dib who was the chief resident for
the past two years.
Dr. Dahoui received the "Resident of the Year" Award, as elected by her colleagues and teachers, and Dr Salman Mroueh
was winner of the "Teacher of the Year" Award, as elected by the interns and residents.
Two of our departing residents are going to the United States for further study, and three are continuing in the
department as subspecialty fellows - two in hematology/oncology and one in neonatology.
