Blood Bank
The Blood Bank is on the third floor of AUBMC and is directed by Dr. Elizabeth Baz. The Blood Bank technologists provide a unique service and are always readily available to supply patients with all blood products (whole blood, RBC's, WBC's, FFP's and platelets).
Before ordering any blood product, it is the responsibility of the resident to fill a request form and to withdraw blood from the patient for crossmatching. The collected blood must be properly labeled before sending to the laboratory. The Blood Bank supplies blood units that are handled under sterile conditions and have been tested for viruses and already crossmatched for the intended recipient. The blood unit will be handed to the resident caring for the patient by the lab technologist after checking the unit number, the patient case number and name. This has to be verified by the resident who fills in a form confirming that the unit was checked and is compatible with the patient s/he is caring for. On the floor, this unit is again checked by the nurse who starts the transfusion of the blood product to the patient. This procedure allows a three-level check to avoid blood products' incompatibility complications.
An orientation lecture is annually given by Dr Baz to the new housestaff teams about blood products' handling and transfusions to update their knowledge in this specialty.

The lab results are available on the computer terminals
on all nursing stations.
You are encouraged to view lab results at all times by visiting the department’s website at http://labmed.aub.edu.lb.

Library
The Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine provides several resources to improve patient care and residents' education. The departmental library is on the sixth floor in front of the Chairman’s Office. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The keys to the library are available with the senior resident oncall during weekends, night shifts and holidays.
The AUB Saab Memorial Medical Library (SML) is another resource the department encourages the residents to use. A large number of books and journals are available in the library or online through the username and password the residents are provided at the beginning of the year.
One of the most useful sites to use is the MD CONSULT and UPTODATE that are all available to you through the SML. Other web links are also available and very helpful, like the link: https//:www.genetests.com, which by providing current, authoritative information on genetic testing and its use in diagnosis, management and genetic counseling, promotes the appropriate use of genetic services in patient care and personal decision making. Another useful link is the OMIM available through pubmed online. It is useful for any information about genetically inherited diseases.
A session will be given by Miss Aida Farha to orient the Med III students on how to benefit from SML and how to search the literature for evidence-based medicine.
In addtion, the SML website includes web-based tutorials that can be accessed online.
We have also provided the residents with a program that allows recognizing syndromes by checking the features of your patients. This program is available on all the PC's in the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine as an icon on the desktop named "POSSUM". This program does not need any username or password.
We also provide a toxicology program to help residents cope with the most difficult intoxication cases. This program, like the POSSUM, is available on the desktop of all the PC's in the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, including the Emergency Department (ED). (Top)

Pharmacy
The drug use process needs knowledge, judgment, procedures, skills and ethics to assure optimal safety and effectiveness in the distribution and use of medication. The pharmacists in the Department of Pharmacy at AUBMC are dedicated to assume this responsibility.
The department provides continuous service in collaboration with the healthcare professionals to provide the best service for the patients. The pharmacists are always available for the residents to provide help in determining any drug-drug interaction, helping determine the drug dosing, including the determination of the best suitable drug dose according to the blood levels of the specific patient. Response to drug information requests are provided in an accurate and timely manner.
Through appropriate guidelines and presentations, the pharmacists keep the Medical Center staff informed about newly-approved drugs and any other information (recall notices, labeling change, dialyzable drugs, IV policy, etc...). A multidisciplinary approach to patient care is being implemented, and the pharmacist is an active member in patient education activities through coordination with the nursing, medical and other clinical staff as needed. A pharmacist reviews medication orders received by the Pharmacy Department for appropriateness before dispensing. Any questions regarding the order will be resolved with the prescriber at this time.
The Pharmacy Department prepares sterile products, such as TPN, IV admixtures and cytotoxic admixtures in a suitable environment and by appropriately trained personnel.
