A dead society?
By Rana Siblini ---

Amazing how AUB students are so active and lively. They have an unusual potential and energy that they uncover only during the last couple of months before the end of the semester. Throughout the past months, they were moving around so quietly, just like bears that hibernate all winter and wake up in spring time. One might say that final exams are knocking at the door and hardworking students are studiously preparing, but the fact behind the AUB students' awakening is slightly different. Of course, students buzz around campus during the last two weeks of the semester because of the departments' gala dinner competition. This competition among majors' societies: has become a tradition on the level of publicity, venue, ticket prices, and entertainment program. It is a pity to see some galas flopping and not attracting many students while others are sold out weeks in advance. AUB students and Lebanese youth in general, have the ability to make it through all the night hangouts, especially where food and music dominate. If only they used this energy in more fruitful activities. No such massive mobility of students is ever seen when it comes to attending whether in the University or outside, an academic, intellectual, scientific or cultural event that could enlarge the horizons of their mind. Some interesting activities are held in town, like discussions, lectures, and poetry circles, but all are dominated by the older generation among which a single young participant might feel out of place. Certainly one needs to relax and cool off from time to time, but the "Saturday night" trend is spreading more and more, and is carrying the Lebanese society to a superficial level. I am afraid that we will soon become a dead society without any creativity, if we haven't already done so.
