Anonymous letter stirs complaints

By Yasmina Araman---

The letter of complaint sent by the anonymous "blablabla" writer about the Big Game organizational flaws as well as the cancelled team parade provoked a wide scale reaction encompassing all the AUB athletic community. In response to his letter entitled "AUB Athlete's Night Proves Royal Failure," the anonymous, sharp critic received reply e-mails all sent via the AUB sports' mailing list. Nadine Moawad, the Sports Webmaster, tried to focus on the hard job and serious efforts undertaken by the athletic community to make the Big Game successful despite the hour-late start of the event and the cancellation of the athletes' parade. Another criticism voiced by the writer was the obligation faced by the athletic community to be present in case no supporters showed up to cheer and encourage the soccer players. In addition, Alia Al Zoughbi, captain of the badminton team, talked about the bad timing of the event, which cut into precious reading period time. "Discrimination" towards teams which received only one most valuable player award for both genders while others were granted an award for each sex was also pointed out. Ghaleb Halimi, director of the Athletics Department, explained that the MVP nominations were the entire responsibility of the teams' coaches, and that some of them preferred to offer only one award for a single member of their team. The absence of mats for the martial arts demonstration was also emphasized in an e-mail sent by Sharif Abdunnur, captain of the varsity wrestling team. Indeed, Abdunnur pointed out that most of the members of his discipline were slightly injured. Halimi explained that Sami Kiblawi, the MC of the event, was informed by walkie-talkie about the mats, which were piled next to the bleachers. According to Halimi, "the Greenfield (was) wet and very smooth" and the mats needed "not to be placed." Finally, all the students can hope for is an improvement in next year's performance, a concern voiced by both students and administration.
