CC and HRPC raise funds for Intifada

Concerned with the issue of the Palestinian Intifada, the Communications Club was set on raising student awareness about current topics and conflicts in Lebanon and its neighboring regions. It welcomed AUB student support and donations during the five days in which a stand promoting human rights was set up along side West Hall. "This is a campaign to support the Palestinian Intifada," stated President Anwar Abdulbaki. A certain number of AUB students are politically inclined, and the stand allows those individuals to voice their concern and give their support to issues they feel strongly about. All donations collected during the five days were to be transferred to a Palestinian Intifada account at the Arab Bank. The stand set up on campus was a branch of a bigger organization based in Lebanon, which also supports the Palestinian cause. "We as a club wanted AUB to join such an activity. We are trying to bring attention to events going on outside campus and give students a chance to experience them and give us their input." Although a majority of AUB students are not involved in the political arena, and Abdulbaki goes as far as to say that many "haven't even welcomed the idea," many have contributed to the cause through their donations and words of encouragement. "Even if a student only pays LL1000, that is enough to show that he cares." Two years since its restoration, the Communications Club has successfully brought about student awareness of economic and political issues. Although discussion of certain issues was restricted by the old administration, it is no longer a problem with the new administration and the club now enjoys some new-found flexibility and freedom.
