Lebanon
on Top of the World
By Elias Abou
Samra ---
Lebanese supremacy is not restricted to the Hikmeh Basketball team only.
In yet another field Lebanon seems to be a leading country. Believe
it or not, Lebanon has the greatest deforestation rate in the whole world!
The United Nations Development Program placed Lebanon
on top of the list of countries suffering deforestation between 1990 and
1995, with a deforestation rate of 8.1%. What seems to be more dangerous
is that peace has proven to be more harmful to our forests than war.
I do not mean that peace in Lebanon is incomplete, although it makes sense
to me. Use your baby math to calculate the number of years it would
take us to transform our dear country into a desert. Yes! You
are right. Your children might not find a tree to climb on. If you
are the kind of person who calls a half empty glass half full, you
might be glad because there is less chance for your child to break his
leg.
But let me remind you of some consequences of desertification.
When no more trees grow in Lebanon, nothing will hold the fertile soil
on top of our steep mountains. This doesn’t only mean that you won’t
be able to grow crops, but it also means that the earth will not absorb
rainwater, and the underground water reserves will dry up.
Conclusion: It is not of great importance to become
a leader, what’s important is how and in what field you become a leader. |
