In reaction to recent Israeli military escalations on
Palestinian-controlled areas, the Palestinian Cultural Club,
backed by the University Student Faculty Committee, the
Student Representative Committees, different political parties,
and hundreds of AUB students, staged a solidarity week in
support of the Palestinian people and the Intifada. Tuesday
witnessed an open demonstration reminiscent of the seventies,
which commenced in AUB, then wended its way in a protest
march to MartyrsÕ Square despite the rain. Students there
raised the Palestinian flag, while one student climbed up
two of the poles holding the Arab League summit flags and
removed the Egyptian and Jordanian national flags to denounce
their absence at the Beirut summit. Since the leaders of

Support of Palestinians should yield more fruitful results

The chaotic full-time
student demonstrations last week raise many questions
about the maturity of the student body and its inability
to orchestrate a systematic effort that would help in
reducing the suffering of the Palestinian people. These
demonstrations bring into question the strategies of
the administration as well. These student demonstrations,
as well as all those of the rest of the Arab world,
failed in wakening our leaders from their deep coma.
The recklessness of our Arab leaders hit its climax
as their European counterparts preceded them in calling

Unity within organized chaos
By Lama Tassabehji
Looking
around me this whole week I was amazed by such unity the
AUB students exhibited. Not only did the students show
unity towards the mutual goal of demonstrating how they
feel about the Palestinian-Israeli situation, but they
were also punctual and truthful in everything they did.
By truthful I mean if they said a certain lecture was
to be given or a certain demonstration was to take place,
it took place with no delay no discussion. I have never
seen such punctuality or perseverance before in AUB. Usually
things take forever to occur, but I guess when the situation
demands organized thoughts and actions then you will have

Eighteen months of bitter Israeli-Palestinian confrontations
since the eruption of the second Intifada in September 2000
have, over the last week, culminated in the most brutal Israeli
military escalation yet, hurling enraged protesters onto the
streets in masses. Students have manifested at AUB by the
thousands, joining the Arab and international community, including
Italy, Japan, Belgium, and France, in marches expressing solidarity
with the Palestinian people and the Intifada.more
