Election fever reaches peak

Sparks of friction were ignited on the Green Oval yesterday when students with various political and non-political affiliations nominated for the SRC elections introduced themselves and their platforms to a steadily increasing student body during an open forum sponsored by the Debate Club. The friction began when Sons of Life candidate Walid Masroua commented that innumerable sit-ins were taking place every year with nil results. Commoner Toufic Koussa objected citing last year's SRC elections, the postponement of the drop and ad period, and the control of the tuition increase. more

Decision is yours, fellow students!
By Elias Abou Samra
The election of Student Representative Committees is a procedure introduced to student life at AUB 20 years ago with the aim of giving students a first lesson in democracy and institutional work. It is through a democratic electoral system that students can effectively participate in the decision making process at AUB. Today, SRC elections remain an unforgettable experience for every student who steps into this university, but what happened to the ABC's of democracy that we are supposed to acquire from these elections? more

Is AUB an Island?
By Lama Tassabehji
Well at first, though the question posed above made me think, Hey ,what are you talking about? AUB is in the center of Lebanon, in the capital city of Beirut carrying on not only Lebanese traditions but American as well as many other traditions based on the multiple nationalities of students and professors. But then when one takes a step back and looks at the AUB community, what is apparent to the naked eye are the fortress walls that protect it from the city around. By Saifedean Ammous

A few weeks ago Israeli forces invaded the tiny Palestinian village of Beit Rima and committed horrible massacres reminiscent of Deir Yasseen and 1948. In the space of two days, Israeli army operations claimed the lives of tens of Palestinians. It was a criminal act that ranks among the best in the illustrious CV of Ariel Sharon. However, knowing Ariel Sharon, what really scared many people was not just the massacres themselves, but also, more dangerously, the thought of what might follow. more

What have you done?
By Mohamad Elfakhani

"Vote for X. I want to improve the cafeteria. Increase financial aid. Increase student loans. Increase computers, etc." Wow! Me too. We must be twins or have some sort of bond (sarcasm). I "magically" agree with everything you're saying. more

Graphic design concentration camp

Frequent overnights, caffeine, creative frustration, and low appreciation from their peers are no stranger to a member of the Department of Architecture and Design. How if we add to that a feeling of not belonging, a waste of space, and someone who can easily be shoved off elsewhere? more

American football takes off at AUB
College football is a huge industry in the USA, and to see the sport making its way onto the AUB Green Field on Sunday was a wonderful sight. At around 12 noon, the American football tournament kicked off with a rush of adrenaline. Moans and groans were heard as players tackled each other in desperate attempts to get the ball into the end zones. more
