Few AUB students bike to campus as biking can be quite difficult
due to the narrow streets of Beirut. According to the AUB
security office, there are three bike racks installed at AUB:
the Medical Gate, Sea Gate, and Faculty Housing Gate. At first
glance, the bike rack at the AUB Medical Gate appears to be
in heavy use, since a large number of bikes are locked in
the area without much room for more. However, it has recently
come to Outlook's attention that a large number of these bikes
have been parked in the same spot for quite some time now.
According to AUB security guards at Main Gate, who prefer
to remain anonymous, some of the bikes have been parked for
a couple of months to as long as three years. On careful observation,
a couple of the bikes actually have spider webs all over them.
Nader Habli, a Medicine I student, told Outlook as he was
searching for a spot for his bike, "I have been riding to
campus for a while now. I see the same bikes daily when I
arrive at eight in the morning and when I leave around nine
in the evening. I have to squeeze my bike into a tight space
everyday." When asked about the parked bikes, AUB Chief of
Protection Mr. Saadallah Shalak said, "Outlook is the first
to bring this to our attention. This is absolutely not acceptable."
Shalak promised to place stickers of some sort, starting in
October, on each of the bikes to see which remain immobile
for a certain amount of time. After that the bikes will be
removed and placed in a storage room. In addition, Shalak
informed Outlook that he would make an effort to add bike
racks at the guy's dorms, girl's dorms, Sea Gate, Medical
Library Gate, as well as an additional rack at the Medical
Gate. An enthusiastic and helpful Mr. Shalak told Outlook,
"We really want to encourage students to bike to campus. It
can be great exercise. But the government has to do something
about the streets to make it safer for bike riders."
