A selection of ongoing research projects:
  1. Ghulmiyyah L, Nassar A,Usta I. Intravenous oxytocin use to decrease blood loss during cesarean section. What is the optimal dose: A randomized blinded trial.
The aim of this study is to determine the optimal dose of intravenous oxytocin to decrease the amount of blood loss during cesarean section.

  2. Nassar A, Musallam K, Succar J, Usta I. Fasting during Ramadan: is it a risk factor for preterm labor and delivery? This study aims to determine the effect of fasting during the month of Ramadan on preterm labor and birth. In addition, it will study the difference in the effect at different gestational ages as compared to non-fasting pregnant women matched for both maternal and gestational ages, as well as parity and body mass index. The study hypothesis is that even short periods of dehydration and food deprivation in those patients increase their risk of having preterm labor and delivery. The data generated will be used to better counsel patients who plan to fast during the month of Ramadan regarding the risks of this practice.

  3. Nassar AH, Berjawi G, Ghulmiyyah L, Usta I. Aromatase Inhibitors for the Medical Management of Uterine Leiomyomas in Perimenopausal Women: A pilot Study. The objective of our study is to assess the effect of aromatase inhibitors on the size of leimyomata in perimenopausal women. The null hypothesis is that aromatase inhibitors result in a clinically significant rduction in the size of fibroids that could obviate the need of surgical intervention in this group of patients.

  4. Nassar AH, Hannoun A, Chaaban S, Elias E, Usta IM. The effect of the subspecialty on the acceptance of prenatal diagnostic tests is low
risk pregnant women. This study aims at determining the effect of he subspecialty of the obstetrician on the acceptance of women to undertake
tests like triple screen and amniocentesis.

  5. Nassar AH, Abdel Reda H, Succar J, Sayegh L, Usta I. Gestational age at elective induction of labor in relation to the neonatal outcomes. This is a
prospective study that aims at evaluating the neonatal outcomes of infants born after elective induction of labor in relation to the gestational age.

  6. Nassar AH, Khalife T, Awwad J, Saasouh W, Hayek S, Najjar Y, Usta IM. The incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in twin pregnancies
receiving prophylactic 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate. The objective of this study is to check if the added progesterone burden of 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate would further worsen the diabetogenic milieu of a twin pregnancy that is already at a higher risk of GDM.

  7. Nassar AH, Succar J, Musallam K, Usta I. Fasting during Ramadan: is it a risk factor for preterm labor and delivery? This study aims to
determine the effect of fasting during the month of Ramadan on preterm labor and birth. In addition, we will study the difference in the effect at
different gestational ages as compared to non-fasting pregnant women matched for both maternal and gestational ages, as well as parity and body mass
    index.

  8. Hannoun A, Chaaban S, Elias E, Usta IM, Nassar AH. Does parity independently affect the acceptance rate of undergoing prenatal diagnosis?. This study
aims at studying the effect of parity on the acceptance of low risk women to perform tests like triple screen and amniocentesis.

  9. Nassar AH, Murad M, Abdallah R, Usta IM. Progesterone to reduce recurrence of preterm delivery: are we following the evidence? The study aims at
studying whether obstetricians are implementing the recommendations endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists regarding the
importance of giving progesterone supplementation to women who have previosuly delievered prior to 37 completed weeks of gestation.

  10. Nassar AH, Johnny Awwad, Ghazeeri G, Charara I, Usta IM. Prevention of preterm delivery in twin pregnancies by 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate. This is a randomized double blinded trial that aims at comparing the effectiveness of 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate, a natural metabolite of progesterone, in preventing delivery at less than 37 weeks of gestation in a population of 290 patients with twin gestations between 16 and 20 weeks of gestation compared to a placebo.

  11. Nassar AH, Usta IM, Awwad J, Seoud M, Mroueh A. A randomized trial of two regimens of misoprostol for second trimester termination for intrauterine fetal death. This study aims at comparing the efficacy, safety and patient satisfaction with misoprostol given vaginally (the current standard) to that given sublingually.

  12. Nassar AH, Mehio G, Usta IM. Amniocentesis complications in relation to gestational age. This is a case-control study where all patients undergoing amniocentesis are prospectively followed up during pregnancy to determine their obstetrical outcome and any complications that might be attributable to amniocentesis. They will be compared to patients of similar gestational and maternal age who did not undergo the procedure.

  13. Usta IM, Hobeika EM, Nassar AH. Complications following fetal reduction from higher order pregnancies to twin gestation. This is a prospective study aiming at determining the complications following fetal reduction from higher order pregnancies (triplets, quadruplets, etc….) to twins. The complications will be compared to those occurring in IVF twin gestations.

  14. Nassar AH, Zoorob D, Salam O, Usta I. Pregnancy complications in pregnant women with antenatally diagnosed fibroids. This study aims at comparing the maternal complications in patients diagnosed with leiomyomata during pregnancy versus those without myomas.
