Just a quick note to tell you what a joy it is to receive and read what is perhaps the best issue of MainGate yet. I thoroughly enjoyed the articles which are well-written, balanced, informative, and enjoyable on many levels. Well done!

“On Past Presidents and Football Stratagems: Fifty Years of Memories at AUB”

This article resonated for us with fond memories of AUB, as I’m sure it did for many of your readers. Following our father’s footsteps, all three siblings in our family (the third is Leila Khalifeh Cubeisy, widow of AUB graduate Najib Cubeisy) attended AUB during the late 1950s and early 1960s and have crossed paths with many of the fine people mentioned, both at AUB and in the United States.

By far, the most tragic event for me was the incomprehensible loss of Malcom Kerr, one of the finest friends of AUB, whose parents, along with Bayard Dodge, took great care of AUB alumni when they retired to Princeton, New Jersey and opened their home to us. No other family in my memory has served AUB so greatly and with such sacrifice. I am sure others would equally recognize great friends and stalwarts of AUB.

What a wonderful article! I am glad you sent it as I was not aware that the online website offered much more than the magazine itself. I will forward it to several people that I know will love it. I don’t think there is one graduate who cannot relate to several parts of the article and touched by faculty and friends...as students, children of students, fellow students, leaders, business colleagues. All the ups and downs of college life formed lifelong memories and cherished friendships.

One correction probably is that the 1974 sit-in of students was really in 1971 when we were scheduled to have our wedding at the chapel and the reception on the green outside... but had to change plans three days before. Of those in the melee were Awni Qubti (Lina Oueida’s husband) and Marwan Khoury (Rima Nucho’s husband) who were also on opposing political teams.

Sami always related the jokes and funny situations while a student, and always credited his education there as the best experience. He also appreciated it more because he was penniless and sometimes could not afford a cup of coffee.

“CCC Scientific Research Building Inaugurated”
The members of the AUB Alumni Engineering and Architecture Chapter were happy to see in the MainGate spring issue 2007 the picture of the CCC Scientific Research Building constructed on the lower campus that gave research facilities to engineering students and faculty members.

CCC, the largest contracting company in the Middle East, with its two pillars, Hasib Sabagh and Sai’d Khoury, are continuing the legacy of Dr. Daniel Bliss in supporting AUB and its students through those donations and the endowed scholarship funds given to AUB over the years.

The AUB Alumni Engineering and Architecture Chapter is thankful to CCC, which is also employing thousands of AUB graduates in all fields who are behind the success of the company.

The chapter would like to extend its appreciation to the endless fundraising efforts

and commitment of President Waterbury and the Board of Trustees in bringing in millions of dollars from different contributors such as CCC, Charles Hostler, and many others to build our “Oriental Queen.”

Summer 2007 Vol. V, No. 4
Congratulations on a very engaging summer issue, both in design and content. It is a pleasure to receive such a publication here in Sydney and be able to overcome the tyranny of geography to embark on a fleeting journey back to a place we adore.

It would be interesting to read in every issue of MainGate an article or two about AUB graduates who became leaders renowned worldwide for their major achievements whether in the field of medicine, technology, economics, finance, etc.

I noticed that many of the AUB alumni chapters, whether in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Americas, or Africa, are dormant and need to be reinvigorated. What can WAAAUB do to give impetus into the livelihood of these chapters?
