Computers for research and email: Each library contains a number of web-enabled PCs that have access to the LIBCAT, electronic resources, Moodle, email, and other applications. Only active AUB users are allowed to login to the web-enabled PCs. The computers are equipped with the floppy disk, CD reader, USB, and some are equipped with CD/RW and DVD reader. Computers designated for LIBCAT use only are in the Lobbies of the Libraries. Non-active users and libraries guests are able to search the library catalog.
There are two computers on every floor of the stacks. These computers are only limited to LIBCAT use.

All computers in the libraries are suitable for displaying Arabic, English, and French languages. To switch keyboard between languages, choose the desired language from the "status bar", or press CTRL+ALT (right) for Arabic; and CTRL+ALT (left) for English.

Who can access the computers?
AUB students, faculty and staff, with an active AUBnet account (email/internet username and password) may use the web-enabled computers during library's opening hours.

What is available on the computers?
The web-enabled computers have word processing, spreadsheet, database management, drawing, imaging, desktop publishing, scanning and image processing.

Wireless Computing

Wireless computing is available in Jafet, Engineering & Architecture, and Science & Agriculture Libraries through the AUBwlan (AUB Wireless Lan) Project. Each active student/faculty/staff may connect to the wireless service. All you need to do is to:

  1. Have a wireless network interface card (built-in or external). Only IEEE802.11g and IEEE802.11b cards are supported by AUBwlan.
  2. Register your computer/name, and install the license on your laptop (installation is done by the Computing and Networking Services – CNS).
For information on how to set-up your laptop and connect to the wireless service, you may call the CNS helpdesk at extensions: ext. 2260/1 or visit the site: http://www.aub.edu.lb/cns/helpdesk/

Where can I use my laptop in the Libraries
You may use your registered laptop in all public areas:
  1. Jafet: Lobby, Reference, Periodical Reading room, Archives and Special Collections, Reserve Reading room, study carrels (Everywhere in the Libraries).
  2. Engineering & Architecture: all areas.
  3. Science & Agriculture: all areas.

Stand-alone Printers
The stand-alone printer is connected locally to a computer. You need a magnetic card to print. Automatic dispenser machines to buy and re-charge magnetic cards for printing (and photocopying) are available in the three libraries. Printing of one A4 page costs 1 unit (LL.50).
The magnetic card is reusable after the encoded value is exhausted by adding value to it through the dispense machine. The machine accepts only L.L5,000, and the libraries do not deal with cash change.

Network Printers
Network laser printing from public computers is available for students with a valid AUBnet account. The network printers are located in Jafet Library Lab, and in the branch libraries. Printing of one A4-page costs LL.60.

To print from a public PC to a laser printer:

    1. You should be an Active AUBnet user (registered student)
    2. You should have added AUBnet Computing Units credit/quota to your AUBnet printing account.

    Pay/Buy Computing Units
AUBnet Computing Units slips are available at the Cashier's Office (College Hall). Each slip costs LL 15,000 and permits the printing of 250 laser quality pages on any of the public labs that are equipped with AUBnet printers.
Follow the instruction on the slip to activate your printing account.

Re-charge/Check your Quota To add credit to your printing quota or to view your printing history:

    1. Select Students from AUB home page, http://www.aub.edu.lb/cns/helpdesk/comp-units.html
    2. select Managing your AUBnet Account
    3. To add printing quota, under Manage Your AUBnet Printing/Web quota Printing Credits and follow the instructions. You will be asked to enter the serial number (ex. P00000) and secret code from the AUBnet Computing Units slip.
    4. To view your printing history and your current printing quota balance select "Printing History" and follow the instructions.

How to Print To print from your application (i.e. MS-Word), select the lab printer name within the printing dialog.

Photocopiers
All photocopiers provide a range of enlargement and reduction ratios.
Payment for copies is made by magnetic cards for a cost of L.L.5,000 per card containing 100 units:

  • A4 page - B&W = 1 unit
  • A3 page - B&W = 2 units
  • A4 page - color = 10 units
  • A3 page - color = 20 units

Library users may purchase magnetic cards from automated dispensers located at the entrance of the Reference Department in Jafet Library and in branch Libraries.

The magnetic card is reusable after the encoded value is exhausted by adding value to it through the charging machine located in the Reference Department.

No refunds are made for lost or stolen cards.

All photocopying of copyrighted material is governed by Copyright Law. The individual making the photocopy is liable for any infringement.
