  • Al-Akhbar, An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Liwa, Al-Anwar, Ash-Sharq, Al-Bayraq and the Daily Star of August 2, Al-Balad of August 3 and Al-Mustaqbal of August 4 reported on the signing of a cooperation agreement between AUB and the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Nadim Cortas, AUB Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the Medical Center, and Dr. John Mendelsohn, president of M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, signed the agreement in Houston during M. D. Anderson's third annual Sister Institution Conference (June 5-8), which brought together more than 300 participants from 20 countries. Dean Cortas said: "We are proud to be part of such a meaningful collaboration." Dr. Mendelsohn said:  "For many years, faculty at M. D. Anderson have benefited from a close working relationship with internationally renowned colleagues at AUB. It is a privilege to secure our relationship with a formal agreement and advance our shared vision of reducing the global burden of cancer."

  • Al-Bayraq, Al-Akhbar and Al-Balad of August 2 and As-Safir and Ad-Diyar of August 3  reported that the Lebanese delegation of the University Sports Federation will be participating in the UNIVERSIAD Summer tournament on August 4-17 in Thailand. The delegation will be headed by George Nader.

  • Al-Akhbar, An-Nahar, As-Safir of August 3 and the Daily Star of August 4 reported that two lists will be competing for the AUB Alumni Association elections scheduled to take place on August 12. The lists are “Alumni for All” and “Independent Alumni”.

  • Al-Liwa of August 3 published an interview with writer Leila Barakat. The paper said that Dr. Barakat, who got two PhDs from France, received her BA in social studies and her teaching diploma from AUB. She worked as a consultant for many politicians and Lebanese MPs. The paper said that Barakat was born in Kafar-Qatra village in the Chouf mountains. She said that her dream is to have six PhDs. The interview was conducted by Walid Zahreddine.

  • The Daily Star of August 3 published a report by Louisa Ajami about the wide-spread phenomenon of civil marriages in Cyprus by Lebanese citizens, as marriages in Lebanon are governed by religion-based family law. The paper included the opinion of AUB Professor in Political Science and Public Administration Hilal Khashan, who said “sectarianism is the only institution in Lebanon and any attempt toward secularization would mean the erosion of the whole system”. The paper also quoted Nadia Bou Ali, a graduate student at AUB as saying: “if you are not religious, why get married in an institution you do not believe in?”

  • Al-Balad, As-Safir, Al-Liwa and Al-Mustaqbal of August 4 announced that the AUB Training Program for Journalists will be launching a training workshop on August 27-31, about covering elections. Papers said that the event is organized in coordination with the Embassy of the Netherlands.

  • As-Safir of August 4 published a lengthy report about the foundation of the Theology College for the Near East in 1932, which was the core of the evangelical movements in the region. It said these movements began in 1835. The paper revealed historical facts bout the foundation of AUB (known as the Syrian Protestant College in 1866) and Beirut College for Women, later named BUC and now known as LAU. The paper included an interview with Dr. Mary Michael who outlined the achievements of the Theology College and its history and current role.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of August 5 published an article entitled "Our Stamps Honor Makassed and Recall the men of Beirut" by Huda Taleb-Srage. In her article, the writer highlighted the important role played by the Makassed Philanthropic Islamic Association of Beirut since its founding in 1878 by Sheikh Abdel-Qader Qabbani and others. The paper outlined the different kinds of stamps representing Makassed leaders and the occasions that lead to the issuing of these stamps by the Lebanese government. The paper said that AUB was honored in the same way during its centennial in 1966. The paper included a brief biography of former Makassed Leaders. [Huda Taleb-Srage had lectured about gender iconography in the stamps of the Arab world in late 2005 in an exhibition at West Hall].

  • An-Nahar of August 6 published an article by Suleiman Bakhti about the Iraqi
    expatriate intellectual Mohsen Mahdi who died recently in Boston. The paper included a brief biography of Dr. Mahdi. He  was born in Karbala in 1926 and graduated from AUB in 1947, where he met men of letters Charles Malek, George Hakim, Anis Freiha, Nicola Ziyadeh and other intellectuals including Hisham Sharabi, Yousef Salameh, Labib Zoya, Fouad Najjar and Raja Baroudi. Dr. Mahdi earned his PhD from Chicago University in 1951.
    He taught Islamic Thought in Harvard (1969-1996) and headed its Center for Middle Eastern Studies. A June 1947 photograph of Mohsen Mahdi with Hisham Sharabi and Youssef Salameh after their graduation was includedin the article.

  • The Daily Star of August 6 published an article by Jim Quilt, reviewing the content of the document prepared by AUB's Faculty of Architecture and Design entitled: "The Reconstruction of Haret Hreik area: Design Options for Improving the Liability of the Neighborhood". The paper included an interview with AUB Professor Mona Fawaz who contributed along with the Haret Hreik Task Team Leader Marwan Ghandour in editing the planning proposals.

  • An-Nahar of August 6 and Al-Balad of August 7 announced that the AUB Training Program for Journalists will be launching a training workshop on August 27-31, about covering elections. Papers said that the event is organized in coordination with the Embassy of the Netherlands.

  • An-Nahar and As-Safir of August 7 carried the announcement by AUB Alumni Association regarding the procedures for the coming elections day of August 12, (from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm), listing the Western Union Offices accredited for receiving the votes.

  • The Daily Star of August 7 reported on German Photographer Elger Esser?s Exhibition "Les Roses", which will be launched at Gallery Sfeir-Semler on August 9. The paper included an interview with Esser, who talked about his experience of living in Lebanon for five years. The paper said that the show will include an installation of ten glass boxes filled with souvenirs from his time in Lebanon and focused on the country?s wild orchids, which he discovered with a guide from AUB's Initiative for Biodiversity Studies
    in Arid Regions (IBSAR).

  • Al-Bayraq of August 8 reported on the launching of the workshop entitled ?The practices of alternation after the harvest at AUB's Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. The paper said that the workshop is funded by USAID and organized by the Housing Coop Institute in coordination with AUB.

  • Al-Anwar, Al-Liwa, As-Safir, Ash-Sharq and Al-Akhbar of August 9 reported on the forthcoming press conference to be held on the same day at the Press Syndicate by the AUB Alumni Association to discuss the coming alumni elections of August 12.

  • As-Safir of August 9 announced that a ceremony for distributing certificates for the participants in the workshop ?The practices of alternation after the harvest will be held in Monroe Hotel on August 13.

  • As-Safir of August 9 published an article about computer engineer Tony Nahra, an AUB graduate, and his success in the US after failing to start his internet business in Lebanon.

  • Al-Balad, Al-Akhbar, An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Anwar, Al-Bayraq, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa and The Daily Star of August 10 reported at length on the news conference by the AUB Alumni Association in the Press Syndicate regarding the alumni elections of August 12. Papers excerpted the addresses by the participants including Press Syndicate President Mohammad Baalbaki and former Alumni President Fawaz Merehbi. Two lists are competing: “The List of AUB Alumni for All” and the “Independent Alumni List”. Mr. Baalbaki spoke first expressing his strong interest in the elections, especially that he is an AUB alumnus himself. He said: “ I am concerned by the future of our association, and even disagreeing opinions have the right to be heard, in a democratic process, to reach the best”.

  • An-Najwa al-Massira of August 11 reported on the lecture given by Dr. Ali Bazarbachi of AUBMC during the annual meeting of the American Society for Clinical Cancer Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Bazarbachi, the chairman of Bone Marrow Implantation at the hospital, said that around one million people suffer from lymphatic gland cancer every year, and that 360,000 of them die.

  • Al-Hawadeth of August 11 published an article by Jihad Fadel, marking the 25th anniversary of Khalil Hawi’s death. Fadel outlined the circumstances that surrounded Hawi's death. He committed suicide on the morning of June 6, 1982, at the start of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon . Fadel highlighted Hawi's accomplishments, reviewing his books and poetry anthologies. He was an instructor and lecturer in literary critique at AUB in 1959.

  • Ash-Shiraa of August 11 reported on AUB training workshop for investigative journalists launched on July 23-27. The weekly said that the event was organized in coordination with the Embassy of the Netherlands , and was held under the supervision of Magda Abu Fadel and AUB Professor Nabil Dajani. The weekly added that journalists Zuheir Hawari and Rajeh al-Khoury were among the speakers. Pictures were included.

  • Ad-Diyar of August 12 reported on the 138th Commencement Ceremony at AUB which took place a few hours after the Honorary Doctorates ceremony and which included a main awarding ceremony in BIEL and an individual degree distribution ceremony for each faculty. Pictures were included.

  • Al-Anwar of August 12 announced that AUB Alumni Association elections will take place on August 12 and that there are two opposing lists competing: “The List of AUB Alumni for All” and the “Independent Alumni List”.

  • Al-Akhbar of August 13 published an article by Sari Hanafi, an associate professor in sociology at AUB, about the poor situation of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. In his article, the writer highlighted the history of Palestinian camps, the chaos that surrounds them and the conflicting policies applied on their residents.

  • As-Safir, Al-Balad, Al-Akhbar, the Daily Star, Al-Bayraq, As-Safir and An-Nahar of August 13 reported at length on the victory of the “Independent Alumni List" in the board elections that took place on August 12. Papers said that voters elected the list's Fawaz Merehbi as the alumni association's vice president as well as eight list members to serve on the board until 2010. Minister of the Displaced Nehme Tohmeh was named president. 

  • Al-Kifah al-Arabi of August 14 reported on the lunch ceremony held by the association of Lebanese agricultural supplies importers and traders in Lebanon, honoring AUB agriculture professors Adib Saad, Nuhad Daghir and Nasri Kawar. The paper said that dignitaries and public figures attended. Pictures of the ceremony were included.

  • Ash-Sharq, Al-Bayraq and Al-Liwa of August 14 and Al-Mustaqbal of August 15 carried the announcement by AUB Alumni Association regarding the results of the elections held on Sunday August 12. Papers included the names of the winners.

  •  L'Orient-Le Jour of August 14 published an article about the Lebanese NGO "Tamanna" (make a wish), founded on December 5, 2005, outlining its mission of helping sick children making their dreams come true., The paper included an interview with several co-founders of  "Tamanna" including Nadine Akkaoui, who said that the association's activities cover several places including CCCL at AUBMC.

  • Al-Akhbar, As-Safir, An-Nahar, Al-Anwar, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Liwa and L'Orient Le Jour of August 15 reported at length on the meeting held by AUB President John Waterbury with newly-elected members of the executive committee of the Worldwide Alumni Association of AUB (WAAAUB) Board of Directors (elected by the 15-member WAAAUB Board of Directors), congratulating them for their new positions. Papers said that WAAAUB Executive Committee will work on strengthening the ties between the AUB and its alumni all over the world and will be engaged in supporting the goals and the educational, research, and service mission of the University. Papers also included a picture of President Waterbury with Mr. Karam Doumit, Mr. Khalil Mekkawi and Mr. Muhieddine Doughan.

  • Al-Mustaqbal of August 17 announced that a Seminar entitled "Towards a Better Nursing Accountability in Lebanon" will be held in Issam Fares Hall on Thursday August 23 and will be accompanied with a competition for the best poster under the theme "The Participation in the Best Nursing Practices in Lebanon". The paper said that the seminar is organized by AUBMC Nursing Department in coordination with the Lebanese Nursing Syndicate under the sponsorship of USAID and AMDEAST. The events mark AUB Faculty of Medicine's 140th anniversary and AUBMC's centennial.

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of August 17 published an article by Maya Ghandour Hert reviewing the late anthropologist Foaud Khoury's book "An invitation to Laugher: A Lebanese Anthropologist in the Arab World".  The paper included a brief biography of Khoury who was born in 1935 and who got his BA and MA in social anthropology from AUB, before pursuing his PhD in Oregon University in England. The paper said that Khoury started to teach at AUB in 1964 and  became a professor in 1978. He left Beirut with his family in 1987 and settled in England where he passed away in 2003 due to Parkinson disease. His publications include 17 books and more than 40 articles.

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of August 17 reported on the gala dinner held by AUB Alumni members in the Grand Hotel in Paris, which was accompanied with the autumn-winter fashion show for Chloé. Pictures of the ceremony were included.

  • The Daily Star of August 20 reviewed Brian Keenan's book "An Evil Cradling". Keenan had been teaching at AUB for two months when he was abducted in 1985, to be released only in 1990. The book is an account of his harrowing experience. The paper said that Keenan is visiting Beirut  again with his family, for holidays.

  • The Daily Star, L'Orient Le Jour and Al-Balad of August 21 and An-Nahar of August 22 reported that deliberations on a considerable number of inspired projects presented for the "The Man of the Year Creative Awards" launched by Talal Makdessi last February have already started. Papers listed the number of students participating in the competition and coming from different universities: four from AUB, nine from LAU, five from NDU, nine from ALBA, ten from USEK, two from Leb U, three from AUST and nine independents. The awards' total amount is 12,000  dollars.

  • Al-Balad, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, Al-Liwa and Al-Akhbar of August 22 announced that the AUB Training Program for Journalists will be launching a training workshop on September 18 -22, covering the safety of journalists during war. Papers added that the program will be holding a seminar on news room administration on September 24-26 and that the events are organized by AUB in coordination with the Embassy of the Netherlands.

  • Al-Hayat of August 22 reported on the death of Professor Farid Hanania who died in France on August 7 at the age of 98. The paper included a brief biography of Dr. Hanania. Born in Jerusalem on December 25, 1908 he graduated from Cambridge with a degree in law. He was appointed the dean of AUB's Faculty of Arts and Sciences from 1953 to 1965. The paper said that Hanania's house in Beirut next to AUB campus was like a forum, where many Lebanese, Palestinian, American and British dignitaries, diplomats and intellectuals (such as Walid Khalidi and Albert Howrani used to meet).

  • L'Orient-Le Jour of August 23 published an interview with the Lebanese Art Photographer Marc Nader who teaches at the Architecture Department of AUB's FEA. The interview was conducted by Zeina Zalzal.

  • Al-Akhbar of August 24 reported on the workshop related to conflict resolution and peace-building held at LAU on August 22. The paper excerpted the addresses by the participants including AUB student Chantal Kallas, a Christian Lebanese who talked about her experience of loosing her grandfather during the massacres of 1983. In her opinion, the solution is in the hands of the political leaders.

  • Al-Akhbar, An-Nahar, As-Safir, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Anwar, Al-Bayraq, Al-Liwa and the Daily Star of August 24 reported on the ceremony held by the CCCL to celebrate the success of over 20 CCCL patients who passed the Lebanese official exams two months ago. Papers carried the statement by CCCL Medical Director Dr. Miguel Abboud and the Volunteer Science Teacher Hassan Daouk who both praised the persistence and the achievements of the children, despite their sickness.

  • An-Nahar and the Daily Star of August 25 and An-Nahar of August 28 carried AUB's announcement regarding the launching of the Executive MBA program for the fall 2007 and spring 2008, offered by Suliman S. Olayan School of Business. Papers included for the interested new applicants related to registration.

  • As-Safir, Al-Anwar, Al-Akhbar, Al-Bayraq, the Daily Star of August 25 and Al-Mustaqbal of August 26 reported at length on the Seminar "Towards Better Nursing Accountability in the Middle East", held at Issam Fares Hall on August 23, and marking the 140th anniversary of AUB's  Faculty of Medicine and the 100th anniversary of the Medical Center. Papers said that many dignitaries and figures of the health care sector in Lebanon attended the seminar including USAID Lebanon Mission Director Raouf Youssef, the President of the Nursing Syndicate Ursula Rizk, AUBMC Director Munthir Kuzayli, and VP of Medical Affairs, Dean of Medicine and the Medical Center Nadim Cortas. Director of Nursing Services Gladys Mouro also was among the participants and she said that most nurses in the country do not have a complete grasp of the concept of accountability. The seminar included a video conference session with Shannon Sayles, the director of the Safety and Performance Excellence Sentara Healthcare in Norfolk in Virginia. Papers listed the names of the winners of the poster contest on cardiac arrest, where AUB team Dareen Suleiman, Nina Khatib and Hera Tashijian took the first prize. The second and third prizes went for Hotel Dieu and Rafic Hariri Hospitals respectively.

  • The Daily Star of August 26 reported on the party by “Independent Alumni List” members to celebrate their recent elections success. Pictures were included.

  • Al-Anwar of August 26 and Al-Akhbar, As-Safir and Al-Liwa of August 27 reported on the visit by Dean of Medicine and VP of Medical Affairs Nadim Cortas accompanied by AUBMC Physicians Fadi Bitar and Suleimn Mrouwweh to Nabatiyyeh Governmental Hospital.Papers said that the AUBMC delegation met with Nabatiyyeh Hospital Director Hasan Wazneh and heads of departments, discussing the means of cooperation between the two hospitals. Al-Anwar and As-Safir added that Dr. Wazneh lauded the work done by Dean Cortas and AUBMC for achieving better cooperation between the two hospitals.

  • An-Nahar of August 27 carried an AUB ad regarding vacancies for Business Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Full Professor in accounting, marketing and organizational behavior in Suliman S. Olayan School of Business. Qualified candidates should contact Mrs. Hala Azar , assistant to the dean.

  • As-Safir of August 27 published an interview with BBC Reporter Kim Ghattas, about her achievements and her political views regarding the US foreign policy in the region. Ghattas said that while she was studying political science at AUB she started her training in the Daily Star. She talked about her experience in covering the summer war of 2006 and other events in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria. The interview was conducted by Maysa Awwad.

  • Ad-Diyar of August 27 published a letter by Dr. Ahmad Mousalli, an AUB Professor in political science and Islamic studies addressed to King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz al-Saud, lauding his wise leadership in the region.

  • The Daily Star of August 28 published an interview with Architects Nachaat Ouayda (managing partner of IDEA sarl.) and his partner Sami Morkos, about their new suggested project for better shelters, made  of rubber material. The paper said that both architects met while teaching at AUB during the late 1980s. The interview was conducted by Bejan Preradovic.

  • The Daily Star and Al-Hayat of August 28 excerpted the lecture given by the President and CEO of Nissan Carlos Ghosn at AUB's Suliman S. Olayan School of Business. Ghosn said "I see no incompatibility between good management and bad results. Every firm has ups and downs, but never on the long-term. We always have to reinvent ourselves." The paper included a brief biography of Mr. Ghosn, who was born in Brazil on March 9, 1954, saying that when he joined Nissan, it had a debt of $ 20 billion, and one year after he arrived, Nissan's net profit had climbed to $ 2.7 billion compared to a loss of $ 1.6 billion in the previous year. The papers said that Provost Peter Heath, Dean George Najjar, Raymond Awde, Farouk Jabr, Mirna Boustani, Talal Shaer and Riyad Dimachkiyyeh were among the participants The papers also said that Provost Peter Heath noted that Ghosn had been offered an honorary doctorate by AUB in 2007.

  • Al-Akhbar of August 29 published an article by Racha Abu Zaki about the crisis of the Central Laboratory and the refusal of the Council of Ministers of the demand of the Ministry of Health to transfer the laboratory location from Ein al-Tineh (where the residence of House Speaker Nabih Berri is) to the Carantina area. The paper carried the statement by Minister Mohammad Khalifeh saying that the ministry had conducted a study which revealed that AUB and ISJ laboratories are able to cover most of the tests conducted in the Central Laboratory, pointing out that the latter is no more indispensable.

  • As-Safir of August 29 reported on the first two days of the training workshop sessions launched by the Journalists Training Program at AUB, on covering elections. The paper included an interview with the Director of the Program Magida Abu Fadel who talked about the importance and aims behind the different workshops launched by the program. The paper said that AUB Professor in sociology Nabil Dajani participated with Abu Fadel in the training program, and announced that a workshop on journalists in war will be launched on September 18 till 20, all in coordination with the Netherlands Embassy.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of August 29 published an article by Mahmoud Harb about the one-week volunteer camp launched by the Economical and Social Fund in cooperation with the Society of Civil Engineers at AUB supervised by Professor Mounir Mabsout for the reconstruction of Bint-Jbeil area in the South. The paper said that the Fund will be financing the reconstruction of 39 projects to cover the housing of 150,000 habitants in 89 different locations, and that this financing is supported by 25 million euros from the European Union and 6 million euros from the Lebanese government. The paper said that 20 students from AUB participated in the event and included the opinion of Omar Abu-Kar the coordinator of the group.

  • Al-Liwa, Al-Bayraq, Al-Anwar, Al-Mustaqbal, As-Safir, An-Nahar, Al-Balad and the Daily Star of August 30 carried AUB announcement regarding the death of Former AUB Dean of Students Levon Melikian on August 7, 2007 in Toronto at the age of 90. Papers carried the statement by AUB President John Waterbury describing Dr. Melikian as "one of those who built AUB as it is today." The announcement carried a brief biography of the late Professor Melikian. Born in Jerusalem, Palestine on May 17, 1917, Dr. Melikian's first role as a counselor was during WWII when he worked for the WMCA. He left to the US for pursing his MA studies and came back after his graduation in 1949 to teach at AUB till 1953. In 1955 he earned his PhD from Coluombia University in clinical psychology, after which he came back to AUB to serve as the Dean of Students and as the University Students Counselor and left after the civil war had started in 1975. He was married to Alice Baz Haddad.

  • L'Orient Le Jour of August 30 reported on the launching of Habib Srour Exhibition in Delb Country Club in (Bickfaya), from August 30 to September 2. The paper included the opinion of one of the exhibition organizers Joseph Faloughi who said that Srour, one of the pioneer painters in Lebanon (1863-1938), did not get an exhibition of his own work since 1964, when it was launched at the AUB Alumni Club. The paper included copies of Srour's portraits.

  • As-Safir, Al-Anwar and Al-Liwa of August 31 reported on the Seminar held on the dangers of earthquakes in Lebanon. Papers excerpted the addresses by the participants including AUB engineering Professor Mohammad Harajli, who talked about the deficiencies in the building structures in the country and their risks during earthquakes. The Seminar was organized by the National Center for Geophysics affiliated with the National Council for Research.

  • As-Safir and Al-Liwa of August 31 carried the AUB statement, that two AUB students Maher Qanso (FEA) and Nicolas Khattar (FHS), had been chosen to spend four months in the United States, as part of the University Exchange Program for the Near East and South Asia launched by the US State Department and administered by the US Embassy in Lebanon. Maher Qanso will be studying in Jackson State University in Mississippi, and Nicolas Khattar will be heading to Greenville Institute for Technology in South Carolina. Papers carried the statement by the Cultural Affairs officer in the Embassy Maggie Tean.
