CAMS Mini-Course
Mini-Course Information: The purpose of this mini-course is to
introduce C*- and von Neumann algebras, with physical applications in
quantum statistical mechanics.
No background in operator algebras will be assumed. The presentation should
be accessible to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics
and physics.
Preliminary outline of the course: 1st week: Basics of Hilbert space and
operator theory, introduction to C*- and von Neumann algebras.
2nd week: Algebraic formulation of quantum statistical mechanics, thermal
equilibrium and KMS states, Tomita-Takesaki theory.
3rd week: Ideal quantum gases, CCR and CAR algebras and representations.
4th week: Some applications to open quantum systems: return to equilibrium,
non-equilibrium steady states.
Time/Place The lectures will take place at the following coordinates:
3:30 pm, 15-17-22-24 February, AUB, CAMS, College Hall, 4th Fl., Rm.416.
3:30 pm, 1-3 March, AUB, Physics Department, Room 333.
