Statements from President John Waterbury
February 14, 2005

Today a great friend of AUB and a member of the University's Board of Trustees, Rafic B. Hariri was struck down and taken from us through a savage act of violence. We who are fortunate enough to be alive are nonetheless victims of this brutal act.
We call upon all of the AUB family to remain calm and to maintain the dignity and resoluteness that PM Hariri always demonstrated throughout his life. We will best honor him by living in the coming days the high ideals that AUB has always espoused.
On behalf of AUB and its Board of Trustees, I extend to Mme Nazik Hariri, and her children Baha, Saadeddine, Hind, Jumana, Ayman, Fahd, and Oday our deepest condolences.
We mourn also the deaths of those traveling in Mr. Hariri's entourage, and express our sympathies to the many innocent by-standers injured in the blast.
Rafic Hariri's death is a tragic event for AUB and for all of Lebanon.

John Waterbury
President

February 15, 2005

Out of respect for our Trustee Rafic B. Hariri and his family, and in conformity with the proclamation of three days of national mourning, AUB will be closed February 15-17 and will resume normal activities, including classes, on Friday, February 18. All essential personnel at the hospital, campus protection, and other vital functions will report to work as usual.
