Organized by the Ethics Matters Initiative at the Faculty of Medicine and Medical Center at AUB. All Are Welcome.
What's the case for and against physician-assisted suicide, or aid-in-dying, for the terminally ill and others with serious medical problems? The first part of this talk will examine the issue in theory, and then, with the aid of the short video "Metamorphosis", explore how events in real life can radically challenge one's previous intellectual commitments.
Philosopher and bioethicist Margaret Battin has long studied end-of-life issues and ethics. These now come into play in her real life--as a result of a tragedy that has befallen her husband, who suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

Founders' Day Student Essay Contest
|
|
To raise student awareness and participation in Founders' Day ceremony, AUB launched the Founders' Day Student Essay Contest in late 1999. This year's essay theme is: "AUB publicly upholds the ideal of tolerance of diversity. In your experience, is the AUB campus a place where all kinds of diversity are indeed accepted?"
All AUB undergraduate students, regardless of class year, faculty, or major, are encouraged to compete/ Essays should not exceed 1,000 words in length and may be jointly prepared by two or more students. A special selection committee appointed by President Peter Dorman will evaluate the submitted essays and recommend up to three awards. Entrants should submit a typed essay, on CD, to the office of Dean of Student Affairs in West Hall, room 112C no later than Friday, November 20, 2009 and they should make sure to obtain a receipt for their submission.
AUB has allocated three awards in 2009: $750, $500 and $250 for first, second and third places. In line with tradition, the author of the first-place entry will read his or her essay at the Founders' Day Ceremony on December 7, and his or her name will be inscribed on a plaque in the entrance to Assembly Hall.

Service Excellence Award
Message from President Dorman
|
|
At this time of year, I have the pleasure of asking the AUB community to nominate candidates for the President's Service Excellence Award, a distinction that is reserved for non-academic employees. This award is presented to AUB personnel who show excellence in the performance of their duties and have fulfilled their responsibilities beyond the call of duty. Ten groups of award recipients have been recognized so far, with their names appearing on the Wall of Honor at College Hall.
In order to begin the 2010 awards selection process, I invite you to nominate an AUB employee who demonstrates extraordinary service quality. Your nominee could be an employee from any level and any area (other than teaching faculty and clinicians), and should be someone who has demonstrated superior "customer" service leading to increased "customer" satisfaction, efficiency of operations and/or effectiveness of processes. This means that these employees have excelled when dealing with "customers" who include students, hospital patients and any internal AUB users.
Your nomination should be supported by appropriate justification, and delivered prior to January 31, 2010 to Andre Nahas, on the 5th Floor of College Hall. Nomination forms can be printed directly from the web:
http://www.aub.edu.lb/osm/documents/
awards/forms/nomination_form.pdf
If you feel that you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Andre Nahas, Director, Office of Strategy Management, at extension 3570.
