The Neighborhood Initiative |
|
The Neighborhood Initiative
is looking for a volunteer coordinator for an exciting CULTURAL ITINERARY
in the neighborhood. This would most likely involve a series of events
in different parts of the neighborhood beginning in fall 2008. This
would include conceptualizing the program in discussions with partners
in the neighborhood and at AUB; mobilizing talent for each event;
getting the necessary permissions from local authorities, residents,
and businesses; working with the Neighborhood Initiative project leader
on fund-raising and budgeting; and recruiting and overseeing volunteers
for each event.

Smoke-Free Areas |
As of January 1,
2008 the Charles Hostler Center, the Green Field, Van Dyck courtyard,
Saab Medical Library Plaza, Building 56 garden, College Hall breeze
way, and Jafet Plaza will be smoke free areas.
Details:
In recognition of the severe health risks associated with smoking
and secondary smoke, and in the interests of promoting a healthy and
smoke-free environment, all university buildings except for private
residences were declared smoke free, effective October 16, 2000.
The AUB smoking policy which is published on the AUB web pages http://pnp.aub.edu.lb/general/smoking
goes on to say that to prevent contamination of smoke free areas by
secondhand smoke, smoking is prohibited in the vicinity of windows
and doorways of university buildings.
In addition the following outdoor public spaces are designated "smoke-free"
effective January 1, 2008:
a. Charles Hostler Center: all outdoor areas bounded
by and/or in the immediate vicinity of the
Athletic Center and Auditorium.
b. Green Field: the entire area of the Green Field
including the bleachers.
c. Van Dyck Building courtyard.
d. Saab Medical Library Plaza
e. Building 56: garden.
f. College Hall breeze way and Jafet Plaza
The University intends to gradually expand "smoke-free"
areas on campus, including in student dormitories.
Please help keep our campus clean and healthy by refraining from smoking
except in designated areas and by disposing of cigarette butts in
appropriate receptacles. We count on you to keep AUB the leader in
all disciplines. |

Magic Pencil: British Council Exhibition of children's book illustration
in the UK. The exhibition features 60 facsimile prints of original
artworks by 13 of Britain's most accomplished and innovative illustrators
in print today. Many of the artists included in the show are so familiar
as to be household names in Britain, Quentin Blake, Raymond Briggs,
Tony Ross, John Burningham and Michael Foreman. Others represent new
and varied ways of approaching book illustration, such as the photographic
collages and creative layouts of Sara Fanelli and Lauren Child.
Some of the illustrations deal with subjects not often considered
the stuff of children's books. Michael Foreman's War Boy, for example,
records the artist's experiences of growing up in Suffolk during the
Second World War.
Britain has a celebrated history of innovative book design and illustration
and the works of earlier generations are known and loved worldwide.
For many, the illustrations to Alice in Wonderland, Peter Rabbit and
Winnie the Pooh were their first introduction to British culture.
Magic Pencil shows how today's illustrators reflect contemporary concerns
with equal force and originality; and how their work incontestably
establishes this as a second golden age of British illustration. |
