Do You Know!
According to a 1967 account by Mrs. Emma R. Nickoley, wife of Dean Edward Nickoley, a young Turkish lady paved the way for co-education at AUB near the end of World War I. The woman in question was visiting the Syrian Protestant College campus with her husband, a young Turkish officer. Escorted by President Howard Bliss, they entered the chemistry department where a student was working on an experiment. The woman was intrigued and wanted to assist, but the president explained that only registered students may take part in lab activity. She told the president she wanted to register. He agreed and she signed the necessary form, becoming AUB's first female student. The woman came to class for three consecutive days then stopped, having left the country with her husband in a hurry. Shortly later the Turks capitulated to the Allies. "Not a Turkish subject remained" in Beirut.
