Residency Programs
Graduates of medical schools, listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) Directory of Medical Schools, are eligible to join the post-graduate program at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine and Medical Center. Applications are accepted at the First Postgraduate Year Level (PGY I) for all programs, except Diagnostic Radiology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, and Otolaryngology.
Dental graduates are eligible to join the Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics residency program. This advanced education program is designed to carry clinical activities in a scholarly environment where basic science and clinical orthodontics are integrated. Dates of the qualifying examinations for Medical Graduates are usually posted on the GME website in November of each academic year. As for Dental Graduates the dates of the examinations are posted on the AUB website in July of each academic year.
Fellowship Programs
AUB and Non-AUB graduates who have completed their residency training are eligible to join the fellowship program in the Department of Internal Medicine in the following divisions: Cardiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Gastroenterology, Hematology-Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Rheumatology, in the Department of Pediatrics in the following divisions: Cardiology, Hematology-Oncology, Neonatology, and Neurology, and in the Department of Anesthesiology in Cardiovascular Anesthesiology.
Requirements for Admissions
Applicants to any of the programs are required to submit:
- An online application form available from mid-November
till mid-January of each year.
- Certification of Identification Form, which will be emailed to the applicant after submission of the online application.
- Certified copy of the MD.
- Certified copy of the transcript of record.
- Three letters of recommendation provided by faculty members who had an academic contact with the applicant.
- Two recent, passport size, colored photograph of the applicant one pasted on the application and the other for Examination Card issued by the Office of Graduate.
- A photocopy of the applicant’s identity card or passport.
Qualifying Examinations for Residency Programs Only
Applicants who obtained their medical degree from an approved W.H.O. medical school other than AUB are required to sit for a medical sciences exam and an English proficiency examination. The examination in medical sciences includes the following subjects: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Surgery. English proficiency examination includes either TOEFL (minimum score of 573, 230, or 88 on PBT, CBT, or IBT respectively) or IELTS (minimum score of 7.0)
Exemption from Examinations
Graduates who have passed the USMLE step II with competitive score will be exempted from AUB medical sciences examination. Exemption from examination does not imply acceptance into the residency programs.
Acceptance
Applicants with a competitive score on the medical sciences exam may be invited for an interview in one or more of the department of their choice. Several departments require additional clinical examination supervised by a faculty member. Acceptance to any of the residency program is highly competitive. The total number of applicants accepted is determined by the availability of positions.
