  • Do You Suffer from Heartburn?

  • Drs William Chey and Paul Moayyedi, the recently appointed co-editors-in-chief of the American Journal of Gastroenterology, have invited Dr Ala Sharara to join the editorial board of the journal in 2010. The American Journal of Gastroenterology is the official publication of the American College of Gastroenterology. With a 2008 impact factor of 6.44, AJG ranks sixth among 55 GI and Hepatology journals making it one of the leading authoritative clinical resources in the field. Dr Sharara is also on the editorial boards of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the World Journal of Gastroenterology, and that of Liver International.

  • Dr Sharara was selected amongst a group of leaders in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Disease to join the faculty of the IBD9 symposium held by Ferring in Athens, Greece from October 14-17. The meeting was attended by over 700 delegates from 36 countries and was held under the title: "Global Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Learning from each other". Dr Sharara discussed the epidemiology of IBD in the Middle East and the effect of different patients, practices & cultures on compliance and outcomes. He also participated in Meet-the-Professor luncheons and discussions.

  • Dr Ala Sharara was selected by Drs. Stephan Zeuzem and Nizam Afdal, Chairs of the International Conquer C Coalition (IC-3) to join the advisory board of the coalition consisting of a group of 40 international experts. The I-C3 consists of a group of accomplished and eminent experts from a variety of hepatitis C-related disciplines who are committed to advancing medicine and the treatment of hepatitis C. Participants of the I-C3 were selected on the basis of their expert work and accomplishments in the field of HCV. The decision was based on a comprehensive search and took into consideration factors such as peer-reviewed publications, leadership in clinical and scientific societies, and professional and academic experience.   • Dr Assaad Soweid was invited along with an elite group of European and North American endoscopy experts, as a faculty member in the 9th International Advanced Endoscopy Workshop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (July 14 - 17, 2009. Dr Soweid performed televised live demonstrations in endosonography, gave a clinical state-of-the art symposium, and was among select speakers in the round-table discussion session on the management of pancreatic malignancy.

  • Dr Ala Sharara was selected by Dr Lyndon Hernandez, Chair of the Editorial Review Board of the prestigious journal Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, as one of the top reviewers for the year. He was awarded a framed certificate on Monday June 1, 2009, during the International Celebration and Reception in honor of Dr George Triadafilopoulos at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) at the Chicago Sheraton Hotel Ballroom. The selection of the Top Reviewers is based on several factors, including number of reviews performed and scores given to each review by the Associate Editors.



  • Dr Assaad Soweid was invited, among a select group of world authorities in the field of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), to attend the prestigious EURO-EUS 2008 meeting in Milan. He moderated a clinical session and performed live endosonographic demonstrations to a large group of European and international gastroenterologists.

  • Dr Assaad Soweid was elected as Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) in recognition of his outstanding worldwide teaching contributions in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy.

  • Dr Kassem Barada has been promoted to Professor of Medicine as of October 1, 2008.

  • Dr Ala Sharara has been invited as a Visiting Professor to Emory University School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in early October 2008. He will deliver medicine and GI Grand Rounds at the two prestigious universities and visit with selected faculty and fellows.

  • Dr Ala Sharara elected as Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF), the organization's highest level of membership. The prestigious designation of fellowship is awarded to select members for their outstanding contributions to the field of gastroenterology.
