Welcome to FEASC 2005
Welcome to the Fourth FEA Faculty Student Conference
at the American University of Beirut. The objectives of the conference
are many: It provides a forum for students to write about, present,
and display their project and research results and artwork; it
allows students and faculty to learn about each other’s
work; it gives an opportunity to the AUB campus community, alumni,
local and regional companies, parents, and friends to visit us
and learn about what we are doing. As in previous conferences,
this year we have selected five Distinguished Alumni to give plenary
talks. You can read about the Distinguished Alumni in the following
I’d like to take this opportunity to tell
you about recent developments and accomplishments in FEA. During
the past four years we hired more than thirty new professors in
all departments, twenty-six of them at the Assistant Professor
level. Our undergraduate enrollment increased to about 1375 students
and our graduate enrollment increased to about 280 students this
year. We are in the process of starting Ph.D. degree programs
in engineering in the very near future. The amount of external
funding has been increasing every year.
We are investing heavily in technology for teaching
and research. We spend more than one million dollars every year
in new laboratory equipment and computer hardware and software.
Our FEA Student Career Center continues to help students find
summer training jobs as well as secure jobs after graduation.
It also allows companies to communicate directly with us.
AUB has plans in place to improve FEA’s
physical facilities by constructing two new laboratory buildings
as well as renovating existing buildings. AUB has already received
a gift from Trustee Dr. Ray Irani and Occidental Petroleum towards
the construction of a new engineering laboratory building. AUB
has also received gifts for an endowment to support a Chair Professorship
and another endowment to support the Ph.D. programs in Engineering,
as well as a gift towards the renovation of the Architecture Building,
all from Trustee Dr. Kamal Shair, one of this year’s distinguished
speakers. In addition, Consolidated Contractors Co. (C.C.C.) has
given a gift towards the construction of the new Science Research
AUB has always graduated men and women who have
gone to become leaders in their professions and in their communities.
AUB relies on the support of its alumni and friends to remain
the premier university in the region and continue to train leaders
of the future. Without the support of its alumni and friends,
AUB cannot succeed.
