Chest Pain

Cardiac lesions or chest injuries can sometimes cause chest pain, especially in adults. However, in children, most of the times chest pain is caused by factors other than cardiac lesions.

There are several kind of chest pain and according to the chest pain, the cause of the pain can be determined.

The first is called the idiopathic chest pain. This is mainly seen in adolescents and is due to the growth. The pain is not caused by any organic or psychological cause. This pain disappears with time, when the growth rate decreases. This is the most common type of pain seen in pediatrics.

The second kind is the musculoskeletal chest pain. The main cause of this kind of pain is the overuse of a muscle or a muscle strain. Especially after following certain strenuous physical activity like weight-lifting.

A third chest pain is the Pulmonary chest pain. Usually this is caused by the lungs in cases of Asthma (difficulty and pain in breathing), Pneumonia ( Difficulty of breathing, coughing and fever due to a lung infection ), and Chronic Cough, which worsens the pain because of the strain on the muscles and the irritation in the airways.

Another type of chest pain is the psychological chest pain. In this case, there are no organic causes for the pain but it is rather due to any kind of stress on the child.

Gastrointestinal pain is also another type of pain. The chest pain is mainly caused by problems in the esophagus or liver. This type of chest pain is rare.

The last type of chest pain is the cardiac chest pain. This type is rare, it represents 4-6 % of the chest pain cases. However this type of chest pain is dangerous. It is usually accompanied by syncope (fainting) or tacchicardia and palpitations. An ECG, Echocardiogram or Chest X-Ray is recommended.
