In an honorary degree ceremony held by Princeton University on June 3,
the university recognized five distinguished individuals for their contributions.
Among them was John Waterbury, president of AUB, who received a Doctor
of Laws degree during the university's commencement exercises. Waterbury
was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the American University in
Cairo in 2003.
Waterbury, who graduated from Princeton in 1961, was for nearly twenty
years on the faculty at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and
International Affairs. A prolific writer, he is an expert on the political
economy of developing countries with a special focus on the Middle East.
While at Princeton, Waterbury was also director of the Center for International
Studies and editor of the university's academic journal, World Politics.
During his forty-year career, he has provided invaluable insight into
the political economy of developing nations, advocated for improved understanding
between the Middle East and the West, and led AUB to new heights of academic
excellence.
After his ten-year tenure as AUB's 14th president, Waterbury stepped down
as president at the end of the 2008 academic year. He has been named the
first Distinguished Senior Public Policy Fellow at the Issam Fares Institute
for Public Policy and International Affairs at AUB, where he will contribute
to ongoing public policy-related research programs while also mentoring
younger scholars.
The other honorary degrees awarded by Princeton at the ceremony were to
Quincy Jones, George Kateb, Mary-Claire King, and Haruki Murakami. Honorary
degree recipients are nominated by a trustee committee and elected by
Princeton's Board of Trustees.
