Emergency Nurses Association Conference 2008

Gladys Mouro, the director of AUB Nursing Services, was invited as the keynote speaker at the Annual Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Conference on March 1 in Honolulu. The title of the conference was "Leadership in Times of War: The Rise, Fall, and the Rise Again of Nursing at the American University of Beirut."

At the beginning of her address, Mouro said: "This is a story of leadership throughout thirty years of war that has not ended...The destruction of the nursing infrastructure, the rebuilding of standards, and the dream to join the journey of excellence, Magnet, against all odds...One would wonder why, when everything around you in the country is at stake, hopeless, and frightening. Why? Because it is the leader in you that makes it happen. Our story is just one among many in the world."

Mouro received a standing ovation from the 2,500 participants attending the conference. The ENA presented her with a plaque dedicating the first edition of the ENA Journal to AUB Nursing Services. A book signing of her book, An American Nurse Amidst Chaos, followed.
