As kindness is an integral part of education, AUB insists on upholding a humane policy toward animals. In its effort to demonstrate respect for life, and given that cats are sentient beings, AUB's cat program is geared toward control of the cat population on campus. Attempts are made to reduce the feline population via a process called "trap-neuter-release (TNR)," which prevents the problems that result from cat overpopulation, such as fierce competition for resources or aggression. It is against the humane treatment of animals to dump pet cats on campus, since home loss is traumatic for the animals. In accordance with AUB's program, cats are fed dry cat food by designated feeders only to avoid overfeeding and to preserve the high sanitary standards on campus.
