Areen Projects Award of Excellence in Architecture 2006-07 Announced

The winners of the Areen Projects Award of Excellence in Architecture
2006-07 were announced by the Department of Architecture and Design on
July 5. Stephanie Akkaoui won first prize for "Glitches in the Matrix:
Transcending Consumerism"; Marianne Gharzouzi won second prize for
"Infinite Regeneration: Activating Space in Furn el Chebbak";
and Halim Khoriaty won third prize for "Soundless Power."
Areen Ltd. Architects and Engineers established the annual Areen Projects
Award in 1988-89 to encourage architecture students to excel in their
field and make them aware of competition as the best vehicle of progress.
To be eligible for the award, the architecture students who received the
top five grades in the final project design class in the first phase qualified,
and three of those projects were ranked as first, second, and third in
accordance with criteria outlined. The three selected projects should
have demonstrated respect for and service to the community, appropriate
structural and/or practical concepts, and outstanding creativity and/or
innovation.
The selection committee was composed of the following members: chairperson
of the Department of Architecture and Design, Leila Musfy; coordinator
of the architecture program, George Arbid; professor of architecture responsible
for the final project design class, Stephen Campbell; professor in the
Department of Architecture and Design, Mona Harb; distinguished professional
architect from outside AUB, Raed Abillama; professor of structural engineering
from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Mounir Mabsout; and
consulting engineer or contractor representing the Engineering Alumni
Chapter, Sami Alamuddine.
