Areen Projects Award of Excellence in Architecture 2006-07 Announced

Winners of the 2006-07 Areen Projects Awards

The winners of the Areen Projects Award of Excellence in Architecture 2006-07 were announced by the Department of Architecture and Design on July 5. Stephanie Akkaoui won first prize for "Glitches in the Matrix: Transcending Consumerism"; Marianne Gharzouzi won second prize for "Infinite Regeneration: Activating Space in Furn el Chebbak"; and Halim Khoriaty won third prize for "Soundless Power."

Areen Ltd. Architects and Engineers established the annual Areen Projects Award in 1988-89 to encourage architecture students to excel in their field and make them aware of competition as the best vehicle of progress.

To be eligible for the award, the architecture students who received the top five grades in the final project design class in the first phase qualified, and three of those projects were ranked as first, second, and third in accordance with criteria outlined. The three selected projects should have demonstrated respect for and service to the community, appropriate structural and/or practical concepts, and outstanding creativity and/or innovation.

The selection committee was composed of the following members: chairperson of the Department of Architecture and Design, Leila Musfy; coordinator of the architecture program, George Arbid; professor of architecture responsible for the final project design class, Stephen Campbell; professor in the Department of Architecture and Design, Mona Harb; distinguished professional architect from outside AUB, Raed Abillama; professor of structural engineering from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Mounir Mabsout; and consulting engineer or contractor representing the Engineering Alumni Chapter, Sami Alamuddine.
