The English Department at the American University of Beirut and the Anis Makdisi Program in Literature announce the following event for AUB students

The Organizing Committee of the Friends of Jawdat Haydar is sponsoring an essay competition among Lebanese university students on the poetry of Jawdat Haydar.

The essay, which should demonstrate the students' creative skills in thought and expression, should follow these guidelines:
1. The essay should not exceed 5,000 words.
2. The essay should be written in English.
3. The essay should deal with the poetry of Jawdat Haydar.

AUB students who wish to enter the competition should submit one hard copy and one electronic copy of their essay to the English Department, AUB, Fisk 345. Email: english@aub.edu.lb (use the following subject heading: Jawdat Haydar Essay Competition).

Three winners will be chosen by the end of November 2007. The winners will participate in an event commemorating Jawdat Haydar's life and works on December 4, 2007, and will receive their prizes in a public ceremony.
