Muhammad Yunus, a 56-year-old Bangladeshi banker, economist, and the developer and founder of the concept of microcredit, was awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in helping poor entrepreneurs rise above poverty by providing them with small loans that they otherwise would not have obtained from traditional banks.
