Prior to 2002, the University Orientation Program was the only program available at AUB designed to help students with weaknesses in English. And even getting into it required a certain level of competency in English. After that program was integrated into the English Department as English 001, Salim Kanaan, director of Admissions, proposed the University Preparatory Program (UPP). "I compiled statistics indicating that a considerable number of applicants to AUB were being denied admission owing to their weakness in the English language," explained Kanaan.
