The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) recently awarded Sheikh Hamad Abdullah Al-Zamil, a prominent Saudi businessman who heads the Zamil Group and is an AUB alumnus, the FHS Distinguished Alumnus Award. Sheikh Hamad, who graduated from the Faculty of Health Sciences with an MPH in hospital administration in 1975, has maintained strong ties with the University since then, helping to foster business relations between Saudi businessmen and the University. Al-Zamil, while very immersed in business, is also a dedicated philanthropist. He holds active memberships in various health community societies in Saudi Arabia, including the Diabetes Society, the Society of the Handicapped in the Eastern Province, and the Al-Babtain Heart Society in Dammam. During his one-week trip to Lebanon at the end of June, made at the invitation of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Sheikh Hamad was the keynote speaker for that faculty’s graduation ceremony, in which he advised the graduating students: “Practice your profession with passion, and work in a field you love in order to be successful.” The Zamil Group is a renowned international conglomerate with diversified industrial and commercial interests, ranging from air-conditioning manufacturing to food processing, plastics to steel fabrication, and stained glass production to travel services. The group is also involved in banking and industrial investment, petrochemicals and paint, fencing systems, and packaging through its affiliations with numerous international organizations.
