Recycle your printer cartridges and ribbons Printer cartridges can be remanufactured (refilled) and resold. This saves energy and natural resources, and reduces landfill waste. Why you should do it… - Each new laser printer cartridge uses 2.8 liters of oil to manufacture. - In just seven months, cartridge remanufacturing will save 41.6 million liters of oil-more than was spilled by the Exxon Valdez in 1989. - The plastic in each printer cartridge takes more than 1,000 years to decompose. - Each discarded printer cartridge adds over 1 kg of waste to our landfills. - Over 38,000 tons of plastic and metal are saved from landfills each year as a result of cartridge remanufacturing, yet only 20 percent of all printer cartridges are recycled. How to do it… - Send your used cartridges in an envelope by university mail to: Physical Plant, Grounds and Transfer Services. - Call the Recycling Hotline at ext. 2040 and if the cartridges are large or if you have more than one, someone will come pick them up from your office. Kudos… 935 cartridges and ribbons have been collected by the University Recycling Project since 2001.
