A scene from the play in West Hall's Bathish Auditorium

While dark-themed plays, like 1/7 and Schism, staged by the AUB Drama Club this year were perhaps appropriate, given the grim atmosphere imparted by the political scene in Beirut after the February 14 assassinations, the last production of the academic year brought a different twist to the AUB stage: musical theater. Performed in West Hall’s Bathish Auditorium on May 28, 29, and 30, the musical presented was entitled Fame. Based on a book by Jose Fernandez, the story spans four years in the chaotic lives of students during the early 1980s studying to become stars at the School of Performing Arts in New York.

The complications of the mucical involve Miss Sherman (Loubna Shaaban), who is both headmistress and English teacher; the dance teacher, Miss Bell (Arifi Waked); and a student whose dancing talent far outweighs his academic prowess, Tyrone (Karam Haidar), over whom the two teachers spar in a tug-of-war song. Other students struggle with problems of excessive weight (Mabel) and hopes for quick success and easy fame (Carmen). The musical concluded with all the actors, even the extras without names or speaking parts, coming together on stage to perform “Fame,” the theme song of the play.

The musical was directed by Maya Itani, assisted by Yasmine Barbar. The music was arranged by Professor Reem Deeb, assisted by biology premed student Shadia Kaswa. Rasha Abu Hamad was the choreographer. Itani spoke of her first experience directing a musical and the opportunity of working with talented students. “Together we built [everything] from scratch...” and formed “a bond of friendship that developed over endless hours of rehearsals...Together we didi what everyone told us would not be possible: we brought musical theater to AUB.”
