This
year AUB gave its first awards for excellence in teaching following
the recommendation of the Interfaculty Committee for Teaching Excellence,
made some years ago. In a special ceremony on June 26, 2003 in College
Hall, AUB President John Waterbury gave the award to Dr. Rima Afifi
of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and Dr. Ayman Kayssi of
the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (FEA). Present were
Provost Peter Heath, Deans Khalil Bitar, Ibrahim Hajj, Huda Zurayk,
Nuhad Daghir, Maroun Kisirwani, George Najjar and Associate Provost
Waddah Nasr.
In
a message to the AUB community, Provost Peter Heath detailed the
selection process. "We received many excellent nominations for these
awards but could unfortunately choose only two. The interfaculty
committee which was entrusted with selecting the awardees was faced
with a great challenge to narrow the field and select the final
two winners. The committee spent many hours of difficult deliberation,
carefully reading the dossiers and thoroughly examining the candidates'
teaching evaluations."
The
provost pointed out that nomination for this award is in itself
a significant honor which should bring its own measure of recognition
and satisfaction. He thanked all those nominated and all other faculty
members, on behalf of AUB, for their fine past and future contributions
to teaching.
