Huda Abu-Saad Huijer. |
Dr. Selwa
Makarem joined AUB at the helm of the School of Nursing in 1993, full
of enthusiasm and dedication for continuing the mission of her predecessors
and developing a wider vision and mission for the school.
Under the leadership of Dr. Makarem the school kept its regional
role in support of the nursing profession, which has recently achieved
its own order approved by law.
"Dr. Makarem's strong commitment to nursing, and to the service
of AUB, will undoubtedly help her keep up with what she has been doing
and to donate increasing time to her alma mater," said Dr. Cortas,
vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Faculty of Medicine
and the Medical Center.
Dr. Makarem's replacement, Dr. Huda Abu-Saad Huijer, was appointed
professor in the School of Nursing effective January 7, 2003 when she
also assumed the position of director of the School of Nursing. Dr. Huijer
received her BS from AUB and her MS and PhD from the University of Florida.
She was tenured at the University of California in the San Francisco School
of Nursing, where she worked for a number of years. Since 1990 she has
been full professor, head of nursing science, and director of the Center
for Nursing Research at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands.

In that
capacity she was instrumental in developing the MS and PhD programs of
study in nursing science and in heading a large number of nationally funded
research projects. She also holds two professorships in the United Kingdom,
a visiting professorship at the University of Surrey, and an honorary
professorship at the University of Manchester.
Dr. Huijer's research expertise and interest is in the field of
pain assessment, management, and palliative care, particularly in children.
She is also interested in the expanded role of the nurse in the home care
of the chronically ill. She has supervised a large number of PhD students
and published extensively in all these areas.
Dr. Nadim Cortas and the faculty of the School of Nursing held
a farewell dinner honoring former nursing director Dr. Selwa Makarem on
January 23, at the Phoenicia Hotel.
The faculty warmly welcomed the new Director and Associate Dean Huijer.
"I am confident that you will join me in giving our support to Dr.
Huda Abu Saad Huijer," said Nadim Cortas.
