More than
30 graduates took part in a seminar entitled "Commercial Banking
Products and Risks in Emerging Economies" hosted by Citibank N.A.,
a member of Citigroup, in conjunction with the School of Business at AUB.
The seminar, part of the graduate school's credited curriculum
program courses which analyze contemporary financial issues, was developed
by Citibank and delivered by Art Grandy a 30-year Citibank veteran, as
well as senior Citibank officers from around the globe including Douglas
Smee, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Country Risk Management.
Elia Samir Samaha, Citibank's General Manager for Lebanon, himself
an AUB alumnus, said, "We are honored by the opportunity to share
our experience with students at the Graduate School of Business. We feel
that this will ultimately add much value to the students themselves who
are about to join the professional ranks and will benefit the business
community, and the country as a whole."
Dr. George Najjar, Dean of the School of Business, added: "Citibank's
sponsorship of such events has served as a practical touch to our courses
and laid in front of our graduates live case studies as told by the professionals
experiencing them. Coming from Citibankers, this and similar seminars
bridge the gap between academia and the practical world of banking."
Citigroup is a longtime supporter of higher education in Lebanon
and has been a steady supporter of AUB's scholarship program. In 2000
the group announced the doubling of its support to the program by committing
$150,000 payable over a three-year period. The University has been an
important recruitment source for the bank in Lebanon as well as globally.
Citibank's presence in Lebanon dates back to the 1950s. After reestablishing
its fully licensed branch in Beirut in 1996, the Bank opened its second
branch in Jal el Dib earlier this year.
