April 17 the Faculty of Health Sciences invited Dr. Abdel Ghaffar M. Ahmed
to deliver a Faculty Seminar. The subject was "The HIV/AIDS Challenge
in Eastern and Southern Africa: Thematic Issues and Research Agenda."
---Dr. Ghaffar M. Ahmed, who is the Executive Secretary of the Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa, addressed the audience regarding the HIV/AIDS epidemic that is spreading unchecked throughout the African continent. He reported that in Botswana the HIV adult infection rate for the year 2000 was 36 percent, with the number of AIDS orphans |
reaching 66,000, and AIDS deaths
totaling 24,000. Heretofore, little attention has been paid to the study

studies is to critically examine the HIV/AIDS epidemic in its multiple

special AUB performance, "The Beirut Suite Concert," held as
part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Faculty of Engineering
and Architecture, enchanted an audience in the Assembly Hall the first
week in May. The varied program included organ, piano, guitar, violin,
flute, clarinet, oboe, and bassoon music; vocalists, and dance. ---The concert was uniquely AUB oriented: It was dedicated to the memory of the late Dean Raymond Ghosn, assassinated in 1976. instructor, Rima-Magdalen Fakhry;
another was faculty wife, Sally Merar Osborne. Brilliantly rendered musical
accompaniment was provided by the Lebanese Higher National Conservatory
