| Dean
Cortas and President Waterbury with visiting US Congressmen. |
A delegation
of US Congressmen recently visited Beirut for a series of meetings with
Lebanese officials, taking time off on January 16, to visit AUB and its
Medical Center.
The delegation, consisting of US Congressmen Richard A. Gephardt,
Ray LaHood, Henry A. Waxman, Ciro D. Rodriguez, and Leonard L. Boswell,
was escorted by US Ambassador Vincent Battle. The group was received by
president John Waterbury, provost Peter Heath and director of information
and public relations Ibrahim Khoury.
The delegation toured the campus, listening to the AUB officials
explaining the challenges facing the university, and admiring the scenic
beauty around them.
The group then headed to AUBMC's St. Jude's Center for children's
cancer research. Here they were met by Nadim Cortas Dean and Vice President
for Medical Affairs, John Rhoder AUBMC Director, Joseph Usseily Vice Chairman
of the St. Jude Lebanon Committee, Khalil Arab, Secretary General, and
a number of oncologists. The Congressmen toured the Center, and Dean Cortas
gave explanations regarding the facilities. He lauded the St. Jude Foundation
in the US, which contributed financially and morally to provide successful
cancer treatment for 15 children in Lebanon. He said that the Center,
to be officially inaugurated next April, will be equipped with modern
radiology therapy tools, similar to those used in US hospitals.

Lebanon and other countries in the Middle East, and asserting that many
people, especially children, will greatly profit from it. The Congressman
also expressed his admiration for the university. "It has an excellent
reputation," he said.
