The year 2001 was very fruitful for Dr. Mohamad Mikati, director, adult and pediatric epilepsy program; professor and chairman; Department of Pediatrics. Mikati started with an invitation to lecture at the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Saudi Chapter of Epilepsy in January 2001 in Saudi Arabia. During this meeting, he discussed "Inborn Errors of Metabolism" and "Medical Treatment of Epilepsy in Children." He was also elected member of the prestigious American Neurological Association. During April 2001, Dr. Mikati lectured, by invitation, at two regional meetings. The first was the Annual Conference of Pediatrics Department in Cairo University, where he presented two lectures, "Effects of Status Epilepticus on the Developing Brain" and "New Anti-epileptics." The second international meeting was the |
Annual Congress of the Jordanian Neurology Society where he talked about "Pathophysiology of Topiramate." Three additional major international conferences in 2001 included the 24th International Epilepsy Congress in May 2001 in Argentina, the 17th World Congress of Neurology in June in England, and the 23rd International Congress of Pediatrics in September 2001 in Beijing, China. In the first, he was organizer and chairperson for the session entitled "Choice of Pharmacology of Antiepileptic Drugs During the Neonatal Period." He also presented the first talk of the session, entitled "Pharamacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Antiepileptic Drugs in the Neonatal Period." In the second congress, Dr. Mikati was an invited speaker on "Cerebral Palsy in Adolescents." |

The sports committee of the central Mount Lebanon Branch of the AUB Alumni Association held a bicycle paper rally on November 11. More than 60 AUB graduates participated, taking off from Jemayze through Solidere and to the vicinity of AUB in teams of four and two participants. Selection of winners was based partially on speed, but mostly on knowledge. Seven
groups won prizes varying from air tickets, professional bicycles, sports
equipment and clothing. The major prizes were given to the first three
wining teams. |
Prize distribution was held in the closed sports field next to the Green Field. On hand were the Director of AUB Alumni Affairs Mr. Samir Al Kadi and Branch President Mr. Samir Abou Samra. Sports Committee President Mr. Elie Halabi and committee members were also present. The main goal of the event was to acquaint participants with old central Beirut landmarks, as well as those in the vicinity of AUB and its campus. |

The Beqaa branch of the AUB Alumni Association held its 6th annual ceremony honoring new AUB graduates from the Beqaa. This year (2000/2001) some 36 students were honored. The ceremony, hosted by HE Abdul Rahim Mrad (Minister of Education) who was also a guest speaker, was attended by Beqaa dignitaries, students, their families and fellow alumni. Dr.
Faysal El Kak, president of the branch, addressed the students, emphasizing
the |
importance of seeking an education and a culture that protects our
values and heritage. After Ms. Hala Marwan Fares spoke on behalf of the graduates, Mr. Mohammad Machnouk, Alumni Club president, asked the graduates to carry on the AUB spirit in their work. Finally, HE Mrad emphasized the prime role of AUB in the history of the region, and promised to promote the level of education, and an increase in the job market. |

On August 16 the Entrepreneurship Network of Lebanon and the AUB School of Business held a meeting to present two key actors in the regional venture capital and Internet industry: Ahmad Al-Sari and Ramzi Abdel Jaber. Ahmad Al-Sari explained what venture capitalists look for in proposed investments and what Malaz Group, a VC fund, is offering to entrepreneurs in the region. |
Ramzi Abdel Jaber shared his experience in launching Menafin.com including
how he secured financing. Entrepreneurs gained valuable knowledge and
insight into how to plan and execute an Internet venture and acquire the
necessary venture capital. They also gained a feeling for the new Internet
investment climate. |

Farewell Dinner for John A. Wilkinson |

|
On October 24 the offices of Development and of Information and Public Relations held a farewell dinner for Mr. John A. Wilkinson, vice president for development and external affairs. Based at AUB's New York office, he traveled frequently to Beirut where he played a crucial role in coordinating the alumni and fundraising efforts of both offices. The staff will miss his strong support and enthusiasm for AUB. During the party the Development Office staff presented him with a silver tray, inscribed with their names, as a token of appreciation for his outstanding and dedicated service. Wilkinson will be especially remembered for his personal warmth and for the friendships he established with members of the staff. Wilkinson

One of the busiest stands at the recent Beirut Book Fair was that of Dar al-Saqi, which hosted a sophisticated book signing for Professor Samir Khalaf, director of AUB's Center for Behavioral Research. His most recent work, a collection of 16 essays entitled Cultural Resistance, was published by Saqi Books this year. While
friends, colleagues, and researchers waited in line munching delicate
canapés, Professor Khalaf autographed copies of his book, described
by Professor Chibli Mallat of St. Joseph University as elevating, through
"gems of subtle Professor
Khalaf's most timely study deals with classical sociological theory

Following the Founders' Day celebration in Assembly Hall on December 3, a week-long Photo Exhibition and Book Fair opened in the Lee Observatory. The highlight of the first day was the signing by Director of Nursing Services and Assistant Director of the Medical Center Gladys Mouro of her book, An American Nurse Amidst Chaos. The Book Fair offered for sale a number of remaindered books published by AUB over many years. Classic books were for sale from publications dated between 1896 and the present day. The

last year's editor Khaled Adra, attracted 12 contestants and more than
50 photographs. |

Public Relations; Lucy Koons, associate director of the Office of Publications;
Mohammad Mashnouk, head of the Alumni Association; and Professor Emeritus
Raif Nassif. Tzella Dik, a business major, won first prize for her strikingly dramatic photo of the AUB organ, "The Organ Smiles." Second and third prizes went to black and white photographs. Tracy Nasr took second prize with her clean "Engineering Schizophrenia," and George Salameh won third prize for his delicate "Emerging Bonds," portraying two students at College Hall, touching fingers and toes. |
