In the fourth event of its kind, 21 American young people came to live and study at AUB this summer. From July 2 to August 3 the group, divided into high school and college levels, lived in dorms, ate at the AUB cafeteria and other restaurants, attended special classes and explored the country. The summer gathering serves a number of purposes. Offered under the auspices of the Alumni Association of North America (AANA) and the Office of the Vice President for Regional External Programs (REP), it gives children of alumni and friends of AUB in North America a chance to learn the Arabic language and to appreciate the culture of Lebanon and the Arab world. The program also helps strengthen ties between alumni and their alma mater. While intended as a vacation, AUB's Summer Program is no simple outing. In addition to touring Baalbeck, Byblos, Tripoli, Sidon, Tyre and other sites, students must attend a variety of lectures and classes. They go through a rigorous schedule of colloquial Arabic, classical Arabic, history and archaeology. Participation is mandatory. Most afternoons the program includes various sports, volunteer work, lectures, and tutoring as well as visits to points of interest on and off campus. Among the teachers lecturing this year was Mrs. Ann Kerr, |

widow of AUB President
Malcolm Kerr, who was shot dead
at College Hall in 1984. Invited to participate in the AANA program,
Kerr formulated her own course, called "Narrating Our Heritage"
which focused on Lebanese history and archaeology through literary readings
and guest speakers. Other lectures included Lebanon's banking system,
the Arab-Israeli conflict and post war Lebanon. The AUB Summer Program has been a success since its first year in 1998. Among the many comments received was the quote below from a former student called Lana: "I just wanted to thank you for a summer I will never forget. I was very happy with how the program turned out and it was quite an experience. |
Meeting so many
people from different backgrounds, being able to see ruins and enriching
my Arabic abilities is something every person should do." Plans are now being made for next year, when the program will probably be open to college-bound students only. Anyone interested in more information should contact Ms. Miyada Musharbash, acting director for development and alumni affairs at AUB's New York office. A brochure to be published in April will contain full information about the Summer Program including schedules, fees, medical records, travel arrangements, and other requirements. |
