Approval of the minutes of the June 29 meeting.
2. Introduction of newly elected senators.
acting chair, Provost Peter Heath, welcomed and introduced the new senators:
from Agricultural and Food Sciences, Musa Nimah; from Arts and Sciences,
Abdallah Lyzzaik, Nadine Darwiche, and Muhammad Ali Khalidi; from the
School of Business, Said Elfakhani and Hassan Ghaziri; from Engineering
and Architecture, Sami Karaki and Toufic Mezher; and from Health Sciences,
Elections of members of the Senate Steering Committee (one from each
senate bylaws require the annual election of one representative from
each faculty to the Senate Steering Committee. Since only one senator
was nominated in each faculty except in the Faculty of Agricultural
and Food Sciences where Nahla Hwalla was elected by secret ballot, the
following committee members were elected by acclamation: from Arts and
Sciences, Nabil Dajani; from the School of Business, Said Elfakhani;
from Engineering and Architecture, Assem Abdel Malak; from Health Sciences,
Prem Saxena; and from Medicine, Alex Abdel Nour.
Elections of required members of the Senate Committee on Faculty Affairs
(one each from FAFS, FAS, SB, and FHS).
Election of one faculty member from each faculty for a term of three years is required. This year's election involved
only three faculties and the SB. As there was only one nomination from each, the following senators were elected by acclamation:
Fawwak Sleiman; FAS, Muhammad Ali Khalidi (for one year to complete
the term of Samir
Seikali); SB, Hassan Ghaziri; FHS, May Jurdi.
Schedule of Senate Meetings for the Academic Year 2001-2002. The following
schedule of meetings was moved and approved: October 26 and November
30, 2001 and January 4, January 25, February 22, March 28, April 26,
May 31, and June 28, 2002.
Proposal for new bylaws of the University Student Faculty Committee
senators discussed student recommendations for amendments to the bylaws
of the USFC (each senator had received a copy of the proposals in a
document dated October 15, 2001) after a well-received presentation
by Ruba Murad, vice president of the USFC. Miss Murad explained that
the proposed amendments were necessary for greater clarity, particularly
in regard to eligibility for office, terms of office, responsibilities
of the USFC, duties and prerogatives of officers, student representation
on senate committees, elections, funding, and expenditures.
much discussion a number of motions were proposed and passed with regard
to specific amendments; finally the senate voted unanimously to approve
the USFC bylaws as proposed by the USFC October 10, as referred to the
senate in the document dated October 15, and as edited and amended by
the senate at its meeting of October 26, 2001.
Report by the Registrar on Enrollment
8. Report by the provost on accreditation.
provost reported that the process of accreditation is moving forward
well and on schedule. An Office of Institutional Research and Assessment
will be established to accumulate and provide data and statistics on
a regular basis and serve the university in standardizing information.
This office, a transformation of the Office of Tests and Measurements,
will greatly benefit the university's current pursuit of accreditation,
particularly in the self study stage.
Proposal for a new, unified instrument to measure teaching effectiveness.
Heath presented a proposal designed to create a unified faculty evaluation
system, the Instructor Course Evaluation System, distributed to all
senators. The proposal, the consideration of which by the senate had
been approved by the Board of Deans, will be discussed and voted upon
at a subsequent senate meeting.
