In October President Waterbury gave a reception in honor of the President's
Club in the garden of Marquand House. The Club was established in 1981
to provide the university with a contingency fund for improving student
life and facilities on campus.
President Waterbury welcomed the guests and lauded the President's Club
contributions in support of AUB student activities. He said volunteer
work is one kind of support that educational institutions need.
Club President Laila Baroudi spoke next and reviewed the achievements
of the club in support of student activities. She called on everyone to
support the club as it strives to do more, pointing out that five friends
of AUB and the club have recently each donated $5,000 to name one of the
benches on campus as their own. She said this money will support the club
in the implementation of projects benefiting students, and called on club
members and friends to contribute to the bench campaign.
Among the guests were Provost Peter Heath, vice presidents, deans, and
senior administrators. Also present were Ministers Karam Karam and Bshara
Mirhij and MPs Adnan Arakji, Nabil Bustani, Anwar El-Khalil, Yassine Jaber,
Muhammad Kabbani, Mohammad Safadi, Elie Skaff, and Abdullatif Zein as
well as a number of political, economic, academic, and society personalities.
