A Colorful Outdoors 2001 Festival

Outdoors, the traditional festival organized by the Campus Committee each year, took place the weekend of May 26-27 on the Green Oval and the Periphery Parking. The renovation of West Hall made it necessary to reduce the Outdoors area, which previously included the garden in front of the Post Office. Eager for some long-overdue fun and games, the AUB Bulletin Today representative headed towards the festival, only to discover that the single entrance was through the peripheral gate. This long and unnecessary roundabout having been successfully tackled, the writer emerged into the fairyland of the festival, where some 90 attractive stands competed with one another. A corn cob, steamy and salty, was the first reward. There were others: ice cream, iced tea, all kinds of refreshments and sweets, including exotic Latin refreshments. And then there were games. Boxers were lashing at each other with nylon batons on a rubber arena. Girls and boys were jumping up and down on rubber pads. Buckets of water doused unsuspecting clowns. Archery contests were going full swing. IQs were being tested and re-tested and the fortune tellers were predicting happy endings to romantic tribulations. Also seen were traditional oriental makeup booths and an oriental setting, with tent, carpet and pillows. Turkish coffee, and the ever-present mankoush were readily available. Equally interesting were the Engineering Society's car-racing and the PC Club's network gaming. Loud music permeated the area, and one felt compelled to sway with the rhythm. There were Latino, Dabkeh and Bedouin dances as well as revolutionary songs celebrating the liberation of the South. Finally a yoga demonstration gave an exotic touch. As if the colored costumes were not enough, students ran around with all colors of hair, dark red being the most popular.
