Citibank Commits $150,000 For Scholarships

 

On May 7 two prominent Citibank officials visited campus to present President John Waterbury with a check for $50,000. Messrs. Elia Sameer Samaha (BA Economics, 1980), VP and Country Head for Lebanon, and Shehzad Naqvi, VP and Regional Head for Middle East and South Asia, donated the first payment on the Citigroup Foundation's new scholarship commitment of $150,000. The amount will cover Citibank Scholarships at AUB for a three year period, with the grant directed primarily to the School of Business for promising and needy students. Present for the occasion were Mr. John Bernson, Vice President for Finance. Mr. Nazih Zeidan, Special Assistant to the President for Development and Alumni Affairs, Dr. Imad Baalbaki, Director of Development and External Affairs, and Mr. Sadik Al-Assa'd, Associate Director of Development. Citibank has supported AUB for nearly forty years and in 1995, it began making substantial gifts for scholarship assistance. To date, AUB has awarded 76 Citibank Scholarships, including this year's awards to 17 students. Of the 2000-2001 Citibank Scholars, 14 are majoring in Business and three in Economics. President Waterbury thanked Messrs. Samaha and Naqvi for Citibank's generous gift and for their confidence in the future of AUB. They, in turn reiterated that the recipients of the Citibank awards will certainly contribute to a better future for AUB, Lebanon, and the region.
